Surveillance and access control management for Coventry college

DVTel : 16 May, 2008  (Application Story)
Educational establishment in city regeneration area gains unified security network incorporating network video management and IP access control
Surveillance and access control management for Coventry college

DVTel has announced that City College Coventry in the UK has completed the initial phase of a unified Latitude Network Video Management System and Longitude IP Access Control installation. The installation is located in a regeneration area of the city, hence advanced protection for students and the buildings’ assets is a top College priority. Vision Security is in charge of design and the on-going project installation and was instrumental in introducing Coventry to the superior benefits of an all-IP system. Upon completion, the unified system installation will comprise hundreds of access control doors and surveillance cameras located in multiple buildings in Coventry city centre. For City College Coventry, this unification of access control and video surveillance controlled by one interface and supplied by a single vendor was a key factor in the decision to install DVTel. The access control portion of the project is using HID’s Crescendo multi-technology smart cards. The Crescendo solution provides logical access within the various Microsoft operating systems, combined with industry-leading HID iCLASS physical access control technology, providing one credential for multi-application support. The cards also enable cashless vending at different locations throughout the campus. “This is real convergence,†said Satel Naik, Coventry College’s Technical Services Manager, “we have a single multi-application credential that supports our unified platform running advanced access control and video surveillance for multiple locations.†From the beginning the College has been keen to “push the envelope,†challenging DVTel, HID, and Vision Security to demonstrate and implement the most advanced functionality that can be delivered by an IP-based system. To that end, future project phases will enable City College Coventry to offer bundled security services to nearby colleges, schools, and businesses over Coventry’s network. “At this time, even with the high camera frame rate we are running we are still only using 5% of our network capacity,†said Naik. “The network is a valuable resource, made more valuable by the security expertise we are developing, and we can derive revenue by integrating systems and solutions, and by implementing an extension of our security program to nearby college facilities.†“Coventry College represents the future of unified, IP-based security,†said DVTel EMEA Managing Director, David Petrook. “In such installations which have a highly robust network, the end user sees the potential to install highly effective security at their site over an existing infrastructure instead of implementing specialist cabling for CCTV. This ensures they reduce cost and ensure maximum flexibility to install the system in other buildings in the city. This also assists in reducing costs and increasing revenues by offering a highly valuable service to other buildings and potential ‘customers.’†DVTel continues to demonstrate major success in the education marketplace with more than a dozen installations over the last year in the UK alone. Notable end users include the Royal College of Music, which significantly upgraded their security with the Latitude Network Video Management System (NVMS); Bishop Burton College where DVTel video surveillance provides parents with peace of mind that their new students are well taken care of; Havering College in which outmoded DVRs were replaced with IP-based system offering superior flexibility, scalability; and the story of increased security and greater operational efficiencies is repeated at Gladys Aylward School, New College Durham, and in several more.
