Stored data encryption with Steganos Safe 2008

Steganos : 10 September, 2007  (New Product)
Encryption software protects stored data including outlook express and removable media.
Steganos has launched Steganos Safe 2008. It enables users to encrypt their data so that it cannot be accessed by anyone else, even if the storage medium it is stored on is lost or stolen.

Steganos Safe 2008 has been optimized for use on Microsoft Vista and introduces encryption for Outlook Express and Windows Mail, in addition to protecting the standard edition of Outlook and any user-selected data files. Users can create any number of encrypted safes to store sensitive data, each one with a capacity of up to 256 GB. This latest release of Steganos Safeâ„¢ enables users to configure the password entry field for a safe to open automatically when the computer is started.

The launch is accompanied by a promotion that offers a free subscription for Steganos OnlineSafe to the first 500 customers to buy Steganos Safe 2008 directly from the Steganos website.

Any number of secure drives can be created with Steganos Safe 2008, each with up to 256 GB capacity. Large volumes of data such as film archives, digital photo collections, spreadsheets, letters and tax documents can be secured. Existing data safes from the earlier versions of Steganos Safeâ„¢ can be imported to this latest version.

Safes can be sorted by creation date, alphabetical order, size or by user-defined color- codes. For the first time in Steganos Safe 2008, users can choose to have safes automatically prompt for a password when the computer starts. This bypasses the main Steganos Safe window and speeds up access to data without compromising on security.

As with all Steganos desktop encryption products, Steganos Safe 2008 uses the extremely secure encryption algorithm: Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256 bit.

Steganos Outlook Safe protects emails, calendar notes, tasks, notes, email postboxes and the user's all-important contacts. All Outlook data can be locked in an encrypted file and protected by password. Even if the PC is lost or stolen, the user's personal communications, plans and contacts are secure.

The 2008 generation of Steganos Safe introduces support for Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

Steganos Portable Safe: Security on the go Steganos Portable Safe creates encrypted data archives on CD, DVD, memory card, USB key, iPod and DVD-DL.

Data can be accessed and added on third-party PCs provided that administrator rights are available to install the encryption driver. As soon as the storage medium is removed, the data is automatically encrypted and is secure.

Use a USB key, PDA, digital camera or iPod as the key Users no longer need to remember passwords because safes can be opened by connecting a USB key, memory key, iPod, PDA, digital camera or ActiveSync-compatible mobile phone that has been designated as that safe's key. These key devices can even be connected wirelessly using Bluetooth, so that when users leave the computer, taking their phone or other Bluetooth-compatible device, the safe is automatically closed. Passwords can still be entered manually.

Steganos PicPass: picture sequences replace passwords Steganos PicPass enables a sequence of images or symbols to be used in place of a text and number password. The software can mix the position of the images on screen so that even mouse click-recorders cannot discover the correct picture sequence.

The software uses an integrated dictionary to warn against insecure passwords that can be easily cracked using a dictionary-based attack. The integrated password generator helps to create highly secure passwords.

From within any application, any safe can be quickly opened or closed using a hotkey combination.

Steganos Shredder: Ultimate data destruction Steganos Shredder includes a data and deep cleaner shredder. Three methods are available for data destruction: simple overwriting, the technology used by the US Department of Defense DoD5220.22-M/NISPOM 8-306, or the Gutmann Method using 35 rounds of overwriting. The deep cleaner can even remove remains of files that have been previously deleted to ensure that free space on your hard drive does not contain any data that could be reconstituted. Data on USB keys and external hard drives can also be irrevocably destroyed by Steganos Shredder, including using the deep cleaner.

Steganos Safe 2008 includes free automatic updates within this generation of the software.

Steganos OnlineSafe: 50 MB virtual security for free for the first 500 buyers of Steganos Safe 2008 Steganos OnlineSafe was developed to enable users to recover their most important data in the event of hardware failure or loss. The data is encrypted and transmitted securely to a Steganos server. When the safe is accessed for data recovery, the data will be transferred using a 128 bit SSL encrypted VPN-connection. The AES-protected data is decrypted on the computer when the password is entered. The safe's content will be shown as a drive in Windows Explorer and can be edited there. After closure, Steganos OnlineSafe is automatically encrypted and the additional drive disappears from Windows Explorer. Steganos OnlineSafe provides the ideal security for travelers. Should important travel documents be lost, any Windows PC can be used to obtain access to scanned copies in the safe. Steganos software and serial numbers are always available through the user's personal MySteganos-Account on the Steganos website.

To celebrate the launch of Steganos Safe 2008, Steganos is offering a free subscription to Steganos OnlineSafe to the first 500 people to buy Steganos Safe 2008 from the website.

Additional disk space is used for the secure drives. The NTFS file system is required to use 256GB safes. With the FAT32 file system, the maximum size of a safe is 4GB. The portable safe requires a CD or DVD burner and associated software. An optional and temporary hard disk work space of up to 8.5GB is recommended for creating Portable Safes. To use Portable Safes on third-party computers, administrator rights are required first time only. Secure drives cannot be decrypted on compressed NTFS drives. Supported key devices: Active-Sync-compatible devices (eg phones, PDAs), all devices which Windows recognizes as removable and writeable (eg USB keys, storage cards, digital camera, iPod). The Bluetooth capability requires that the computer and phone both support Bluetooth. Key devices are not supplied by Steganos.
