Rugged hard drives for extreme conditions

CRU-DataPort : 21 February, 2008  (Application Story)
Ministry of Defence computer systems supplier selects rugged data storage systems from CRU-Dataport for use in hostile environments.
The strength and durability claims made by CRU-DataPort for its hard-drive enclosures have been validated time and again following their integration into ruggedised servers made and sold by Industrial Computers, a specialist in the design and manufacture of mission critical applied computing platforms. The procurement of the CRU-DataPort hard-drive enclosures by Industrial Computers was managed by Hammer, a leading CRU-DataPort distributor in Europe, CRU-DataPort is a global leader in data security and data mobility products.

Industrial Computers builds and ships approximately 4,000 bespoke servers per year for hostile applications as diverse as military, shipping, submarines, aircraft and even flight simulators. In these applications, the servers are exposed to extreme temperatures and temperature changes, or dramatic and sudden movements. In order to survive the hostile environments in which they are deployed, the server's construction and components - including the hard-drive enclosure - have to adhere to strict component specifications defined by the customer.

Kurt Spencer, Industrial Computers' Sales Director, said: 'When it comes to protecting the safety and integrity of the data in hostile environments, I wouldn't entertain the idea of using anything other than a CRU-DataPort hard-drive enclosure. Military applications for example, demand the most resilient and robust servers and components. CRU-DataPort's commitment to developing resilient and robust hard-drive enclosures to military standards delivers on this requirement, making CRU-DataPort a natural choice for hostile applications.'

Industrial Computers is currently integrating the DataPort 25 line and DataPort LP. The DataPort 25 fits in a standard 3.5in (Floppy Drive) Bay, offers a removable carrier, and houses one or two 2.5in drives. Its universal frame supports IDE/ATA-6 and Serial ATA, and it has a heavy-duty stainless steel construction. Developed for easy installation into any standard 3.5in drive bay, users can insert any capacity 2.5indrive(s) in the carrier, and insert and lock the drive carrier into the receiving frame. The DataPort LP is ideal for small form factor applications, and has been developed for designing into custom multi- drive applications. Its extruded aluminum design is ideal for light weight strength and protection, while it supports one standard 3.5in low profile (1in height max) hard disk drive (IDE or SATA).

Randal Barber, President of CRU-DataPort said: 'Industrial Computers builds servers for some of the most demanding environments imaginable. That it chooses from experience to consistently install CRU-DataPort solutions validates our claims pertaining to durability and reliability, and our investment in ensuring that our hard-drive enclosures live up to these claims. CRU-DataPort is proud that its hard-drive enclosures have proved to deliver outstanding durability in even the most extreme scenarios, and are the hard-drive carriers of choice for Industrial Computers.'
