RFID key control extended at ferry port

Deister Electronics (UK) : 21 September, 2007  (Application Story)
High value items such as laptops and PDA's now controlled by RFID key control system in use at Irish ferry terminal
deister electronic (UK) has recently supplied Ireland's premier passenger ferry port with a second proxSafe key management system, this time the Racx 16 system for controlling keys and valuables.

The proxSafe system is an intelligent key management system. It can secure large numbers of keys out of view in a stylish aluminium key cabinet, providing a cost-effective access control solution to doors which are still secured by a conventional lock and key. Smart RFID keyTags are secured in the cabinet using proxCylinders, a combination of a proximity reader and a mechanical lock.

proxSafe makes taking and returning keys on a 24/7 basis both quick and easy. Barrel illumination provides the visual location of an individual key in the cabinet, and RFID keyTags work like proximity smart cards. Fast track key return is achieved by simply holding the relevant keyTag in front of the reader; this activates the cabinet door and illuminates the correct return location.

With the port becoming increasingly busy, the harbour authority realised it needed to extend its current proxSafe system, by not only for the safe storage of keys, but also high value items such as laptops, mobile telephones and PDA's, all of which are in regular use by various members of staff.

Darren Harrold, Director of deister electronic UK is pleased with this second installation, saying:
"proxSafe is important to the smooth running of this extremely busy harbour. A growing number of users are starting to extend their current systems as they realise the benefits of our RFID technology."
