PingFederate User Authentication Protects Online Video Delivery Service

Ping Identity : 27 January, 2010  (Application Story)
Brightcove and Ping Identity have solved the user authentication issue for supplying TV Catch-up service, enabling the delivery of online television to users in a secure way
Ping Identity and Brightcove, an online video platform, have announced a strategic alliance that integrates Ping Identity's PingFederate software into Brightcove's TV Everywhere Solution Pack (TVE-SP).

Brightcove TVE-SP provides TV programmers with everything needed to operate rich, branded and authenticated TV Everywhere-compatible catch-up TV services. This enables TV programmers and multi-channel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to bring more licensed and subscriber-entitled video content online. By integrating PingFederate into the solution, Brightcove is able to support TV programmers with user authentication and authorization built on existing SAML standards.

"From branded destination sites, to syndication and social network distribution, to mobile and connected-TV delivery, Brightcove's TVE solution and partnership with Ping Identity provides a powerful onramp to rapidly launch TV Everywhere initiatives and a platform for a wide-range of additional functions critical to the success of online video strategies," said Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove chairman and chief executive officer. "TV Everywhere represents a significant and exciting new opportunity for TV programmers to expand the volume of premium video content available to consumers on the Web."

First announced by Time Warner and Comcast in June 2009, TV Everywhere is an authentication system that makes certain premium television programming content available to viewers online. Access to such content requires viewers to validate that they have a subscription to a multiservice operator. The concept is quickly being tested and adopted by other cable, satellite and programming operators.

Through Brightcove's partnership with Ping Identity, TVE-SP supports SAML 2.0-based authentication and authorization services that can integrate with existing MVPD subscriber authorization tools to manage viewer access to programming online.

With PingFederate as part of the TVE-SP service, viewers can use their MVPD account to access digital content directly from affiliated programmers. In addition viewers can use their MVPD account to navigate directly to affiliated programmers and other MVPDs to view authorized content served by those systems.

"TV Everywhere is driving new requirements for authenticating consumer identities in the cloud," said Andre Durand, Ping Identity chairman and chief executive officer. "This solution is not only revolutionizing the way that programmers deliver video content, it also establishes new expectations for federating consumer identities over the Internet."
