Move to biometrics a significant step for banking security

Fujitsu Services : 08 September, 2014  (Technical Article)
Fujitsu comments on its support for Barclays bank and the move it has made to move client access to banking services through finger vein biometrics identification technology
Move to biometrics a significant step for banking security

Following the news that Barclays bank is using a new finger-vein scanner, Anthony Duffy, director of retail banking at Fujitsu UK & Ireland has made the following comments:

"The ever-growing importance of technology to the financial services industry, perhaps most recently evident in the rollout of mobile and internet banking solutions, means that maintaining the security and integrity of customers assets and information sits firmly at the top of the banking agenda.

"Research recently completed by Fujitsu UK & Ireland found that 52% of IT leaders believe that security is a significant barrier to deploying a successful mobile banking strategy. Barclays decision to enable customers to access their accounts using biometric scanners is, therefore, very welcome and may well be the start of a wider move towards using biometric technology within the banking and payments industries.

"As one of the pioneers of biometric technologies, Fujitsu has long supported and helped banks in other banking markets to deploy such tools throughout their operations. Japanese, Spanish and South American banks all deploy Fujitsu biometric solutions in their ATM operations; and the latest Fujitsu laptops and desktops come with biometric readers embedded in the machine itself.

"Our banking clients understand that the vein structure in our palms or fingers is unique to each individual and does not change during our lifetime, making it an ideal means of personal identification. They also understand that it offers the potential to eliminate other forms of identification, such as plastic cards and their associated PINs, by offering a very secure, hygienic and convenient alternative means of accessing information and services.
