Monitored lone worker protection safeguards workers at young people's home.

Connexion2 : 24 October, 2007  (Application Story)
Discreet alarm system with 24 hour monitoring helps protect home workers from potentially violent teenagers.
Dedicated to providing young people with the skills to become independent adults, Holibrook Children Services provide flexible care and individual support packages to local authorities for children aged 16 to 18 with emotional and behavioural needs in three homes in South East England. Aware that extremely disturbed youngsters could confront personnel working alone, Holibrook wanted to ensure that its staff had the ability to assess risk and discreetly raise an alarm if threatened.

Conscious that if a member of staff found themselves in a potentially hazardous situation and attempted to use a mobile phone to summon help, it could increase the worker's own risk, Mark Farlow Residential Manager at Holibrook decided to explore alternative devices.

After reviewing a range of lone worker options, Mark decided to investigate the SoloProtect package from Connexion2. Combining the five-core elements that are essential for a credible and complete lone worker solution, SoloProtect includes the award winning Identicom device, SIM and inclusive airtime, user training, 24 hour manned monitoring and unique TotalCare pre & post sale customer support.

Following a successful trial, Holibrook has purchased Identicom, which is used by personnel working alone. Feedback from staff has been very positive who have seen the introduction of Identicom as an improvement in their safety procedures.
"Young people use our homes as half-way houses between foster care and becoming independent adults", says Mark Farlow. "Our staff have to deal with damaged youngsters who have been in care and foster homes from a young age and now need to work through issues of blame and denial if they are to move on in life. As such difficult situations may arise which can potentially put our lone workers in jeopardy".

SoloProtect combines the market leading lone worker protection device with a 24/7 manned monitoring service accredited to the highest UK standard, BS5979 Cat II, through a partnership with Reliance Security, an established market leader in the provision of electronic security solutions. SoloProtect provides end user training, which has been delivered to thousands of lone workers.

When an employee feels they are entering a hazardous situation, they press an amber alert button, which notifies SoloProtect's monitoring centre. In this way, the monitoring centre is able to note the wearer's location and raise the alarm if the amber alert is not cancelled within a predetermined period. If the red alert is then pressed the centres' support staff can discreetly listen in to what is happening and make an assessment as to the level of support required- involving the police if necessary. In the event of a verbal confrontation, the Centre can also record the conversation for future action.

"Identicom enables our lone workers to manage their own safety", concludes Mark Farlow. "Our staff feel the benefit of this high level of support and find using Identicom reassuring when on duty. They have commented that it also provides their families with peace of mind knowing they can quickly summon assistance if required".
