Criminalising the loss or release of confidential data supported by the peers in a bid to stem the loss of public personal data. |
|
This week, the peers have supported an amendment to the criminal justice and immigration bill that would make it a criminal offence to carelessly release or lose personal data. Following this announcement Greg Day, Security Analyst for McAfee, the world's largest dedicated security company commented: 'This is a positive move for UK's consumers and businesses alike. Our digital fingerprint is an increasingly important part of our identity and the public need to be confident that they can safely disclose information; having trust that it will be protected and used appropriately.
That said, there is still some way to go in the day-to-day enforcement of such an amendment, We should now be looking to a disclosure law. This would help give the public confidence that the law is being enforced and that they will know when losses occur so they can respond & take actions. This would certainly bring us in line with other EU countries, such as France, where more severe penalties are already in place."
