Home security advice Australian summer months

Home security advice Australian summer months

Recent statistics from the Australian Institute Of Criminology have shown that over the summer months in Australia, burglaries increase due to people not securing their homes as well. Don’t fall victim to crime this summer and help keep your home secure with these simple yet handy tips.

Lock It Up

Keep your doors locked – it may seem obvious but as the weather improves, many people spend more time with doors and windows open, hoping to catch a bit of a breeze to help cool the house down. If you are home and your doors are open, make sure your security screens are not only closed but locked. Before leaving the house, do a quick check of your doors and windows to make sure they are all secure, as someone else may have opened one without telling you. Many burglars spoken to by the Australian Institute of Criminology in their recent report, admitted that the majority of their robberies were spur of the moment if they noticed an open window or door. Some burglars will even enter a home despite it being clearly occupied so don’t think just because your car is in the driveway they won’t attempt to burgle the house.

Know Your Neighbours

Burglars are less likely to break into homes where there is a clear community spirit and neighbours are obviously talking to each other. If you are friendly with your neighbours, they are more likely to warn you or the police when they see any suspicious people or activity near your home, thus deterring potential burglars as well. Plus it’s a great excuse to make some new friends!

Don’t Leave Valuables Out

One of the main reasons cited by burglars for targeting homes is because valuables are visible from the exterior of the property. So instead of leaving your handbag or wallet on a table near the front door, perhaps put it away or in a drawer out of sight. When you have finished working on your laptop or tablet, don’t leave it on a desk or table in full view of a window, pop it in a secure area not visible from outside the property.

Install Security Doors & Security Screens

Adding an extra layer of security to your home can mean the difference between a burglar choosing to target your home or another home. By installing security screens and doors on your property, you are not only adding value to your home but protecting it from intruders as well. ClearShield offer a wide range of rigorously tested security screens, security doors and emergency exit screens for homes and businesses.
