Forensic traceability to protect London households

SmartWater Technology Limited : 26 March, 2015  (Application Story)
The Metropolitan police will provide London home-owners with packs of traceable liquids to use as markers for valuable items
Forensic traceability to protect London households

Following years of success throughout the UK, the power of SmartWater’s unique concept for crime reduction has been formally acknowledged by London’s Metropolitan Police Service, who have awarded the Company a multi-million pound, three year contract to protect 440,000 homes across the capital.

Having carried out a comprehensive assessment process, the Metropolitan Police Service has announced a unique partnership with SmartWater, who will become their sole supplier of traceable liquid forensic technology.

Due to its unprecedented scale, this is a ‘world first’ for the Metropolitan Police, and will see London households issued with SmartWater traceable liquid packs over the next three years as part of the ‘Met Trace’ programme. This will enable residents to mark their most treasured valuables and make them uniquely identifiable.

Key to the awarding of the contract was the proven track record of SmartWater’s technology within the Criminal Courts, along with the strategic methodology that was first developed by the company’s CEO Phil Cleary, himself a former police officer. This methodology maximises the impact of SmartWater products in order to create anxiety within the criminal fraternity.

SmartWater traceable liquid technology marks items of value with their own unique forensic ‘code’ which is almost impossible to remove. Any traces of the liquid will glow bright yellow under ultraviolet light, allowing Metropolitan Police officers to easily identify any marked property.

The unique code within the traceable liquid provides an irrefutable forensic link back to the owner of stolen goods and also links criminals with the scene of their crime. By heightening the accountability of thieves in this way, SmartWater has established a formidable reputation as a powerful deterrent.

The Metropolitan Police will immediately commence London-wide searches for traces of SmartWater on offenders and suspected stolen property. Routine searches of offenders will also take place in police custody suites. This will significantly increase the chances of arrest and conviction for thieves who targeted SmartWater protected premises.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said ‘Crime is down in London and burglary rates are at their lowest since 1974, however we cannot be complacent. I am committed to tackling burglary in the capital, and this traceable liquids programme shows that once again the Met Police is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to preventing crime.  I hope Londoners receiving this kit will take advantage of it to protect themselves and their homes from thieves.’

SmartWater Chief Executive, Phil Cleary, said: “As a former police officer, I know criminals hate traceability and SmartWater provides the most potent form available for property. We have a proven track record for both detecting and deterring criminal activity and this was a crucial component in the Metropolitan Police’s decision to award us the contract.

“The Metropolitan Police were very thorough in their assessment of our concept and we are very aware that there is a lot of work ahead of us, but we are delighted to be a part of this world-first project and look forward to working closely with them to assist in the incredible work that they do to suppress crime levels across London.”
