European airline solves complex network access challenges

ForeScout Technologies : 14 December, 2015  (Special Report)
Vueling Airlines is using ForeScout CounterACT to provide real-time visibility of both corporate and partner endpoints and users on its network.
European airline solves complex network access challenges

Having seen rapid growth in its air transport business during the last ten years, Vueling Airlines was presented with significant challenges in ensuring it had the right levels of security for its corporate IT network.

Not only does the company have its own endpoints to manage, but also needs to have visibility of connections to its network from partner companies and remote workers trying to connect with mobile devices.

The company went through an assessment process to determine which was the best security system to fit its bill and ultimately chose CounterACT from ForeScout Technologies to provide access control, policy management and real-time visibility across over 1000 IP addresses.

According to Joan Corominas, IT Systems, Communications and Information Security Manager at Vueling, CounterACT is helping the company to evolve its security posture due to the ease with which new policies can be implemented. Based on this, Vueling is seeing improved access control, automatic external user validation and endpoint compliance.

The company is also using CounterACT to manage the growing use of mobile devices by its employees. To reduce vulnerabilities created by the acceptance of mobile devices on the corporate network, Vueling used a novel approach involving a dedicated network for mobile users, as explained by Joan Corominas, "If a user tries to connect to the corporate network from a mobile device, we block the connection and they are notified by a message that they must connect to the new network for that purpose."

By providing visibility of corporate and external users and enabling the evolution of security policies, ForeScout's CounterACT is able to provide Vueling Airlines with the flexibility to continue growing and extending its partner network with the knowledge that its corporate network will remain protected.

Commenting on the deployment at Vueling and the benefits brought by CounterACT, ForeScout Technologies' EMEA Director for Channels and Strategic Alliances, John Hagerty told us, "Given today's security landscape, ForeScout is more relevant than ever before. Through our agentless approach we see, in real-time, what is connected to the network: corporate managed devices, BYOD devices as well as IoT devices. Next, we check if the device is compliant to the security policy of the company before applying the appropriate controls automatically. And through orchestration, using over 70 ‘out of the box’ third party integrations, we share relevant information between security appliances, solving blind spots and accelerating incident response."

"All of these aspects were essential for Vueling when they selected ForeScout as the preferred solution to secure their network and endpoints," John concluded.
