Electronic locking system for central London hotel

Intellikey : 16 May, 2007  (Application Story)
Hotel employs intellikey electronic locks to improve door aesthetics over conventional card swipe readers.
Intellikey has installed its range of intelligent Electronic Locks and keys into the brand new Haymarket Hotel, the latest property in the Firmdale Hotels portfolio.

Located on the corner of Haymarket and Suffolk Place, in the heart of London's theatre district, the hotel is next door to the famous Haymarket Theatre Royal and is surrounded by some of the capitals best restaurants and bars. Conveniently situated for Mayfair, Regent Street and Jermyn Street shopping, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery are around the corner and St.James's Park is just a short walk away. The hotel is also within easy reach of the city's financial centre

The hotel offers guests a choice of 50 bedrooms and 3 suites. All rooms are spacious and sumptuous, designed in a contemporary English style, each with its own completely individual look and feel. They have a large writing desk with two line phone and voice mail, high speed internet access, mini bar and personal safe. For those wanting that extra touch of luxury there is also an exclusive adjoining 5 bedroom townhouse with a private and hotel entrance and complete access to all hotel services and facilities.

For their guest security needs, the hotel did not want to spoil the aesthetics of their doors by fitting obtrusive card swipe locks. They wanted a traditional type of lock that would not dominate the door but would provide all the benefits of modern electronic security in an attractive package.

Intellikey was chosen for its sleek looks and comprehensive security features. It obtains its operating power from the lock, so there are no batteries in the key to wear out. The key's memory carries the access control and personal identity information for the key holder and the intelligent lock controller consists of a circuit board with a microprocessor and associated circuitry. This miniature computer reads access information from an intelligent key, compares this information with the data programmed into the controller's memory, and determines if the key should be granted access to the lock - in this case fitted to the guest's hotel room door. Each controller operates as an independent, stand-alone unit. This makes all access control decisions right at the point of access, eliminating the expense of wiring to a central control unit.

Ron Challis, Project Director of Firmdale Group, said: 'Like all our hotels, the Haymarket prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere and high standards of quality and service. To make sure our guests are secure during their stay, we wanted a high performance locking system that looked good, offered us the latest technology and was also capable of growing with us in the future. Intellikey provided all of this and more. '

Bernard Morton, Managing Director of Intellikey Ltd, concludes: 'For the Haymarket Hotel installation we fitted 109 locks into a mixture of bedrooms, meeting rooms, kitchens and other back of house locations. The intelligent keys cannot be copied or forged as each is unique and totally secure. It will automatically recognise when it is being inserted into the wrong lock and instantly disable itself if unauthorised entry is attempted, giving the hotel and their guests what they want most - total security.'
