Collaborative project brings state of the art surveillance to university campus

Intelligent business system provider, Boston Networks, and Axis Communications have collaborated on a project to implement a high-performing IP-based surveillance solution across the University of the West of Scotland’s multi-campus estate.

The winners of the 16th Security & Fire Excellence Awards were announced last Thursday night at a gala award ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in London. Axis and Gold Partner, Boston Networks fought off stiff competition from eight other finalists including Sony and Quadrant Security Group.

Commenting on the award win, Atul Rajput, regional director, northern Europe at Axis Communications said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this award which is testament to how we can produce fantastic results for clients when we work closely with our trusted partners.”

Paul Goodbrand, operations director at Boston Networks added: “Boston Networks is thrilled that IFSEC awarded us the ‘Security Project of the Year’ accolade for the project delivered in conjunction with Axis Communications at The University of the West of Scotland.

“This project is a fantastic example of a wholly successful IP migration that utilised and built upon the University’s existing assets to streamline and enhance its security estate.

“The University now benefits from global-leading surveillance technology that supports multiple stakeholders and has enabled it to centrally control disparate campuses, spanning a large geographical area, to significantly improve the security of students and staff.

“Moreover, Boston Networks continues to partner with the University to fully maintain its security system and design future-proof solutions that will further integrate additional security services.”

Boston Networks and Axis won the award for the installation at the University of the West of Scotland, one of Scotland’s largest universities. Together they designed and implemented a high performing IP-based surveillance solution, featuring HD-quality footage and a powerful video management interface across the university’s multi-campus estate. The state-of-the-art solution combined over 200 Axis network cameras and Milestone XProtect Expert open platform IP VMS software.

The new solution enabled seamless command centre control and benefits from edge storage support, failover recording servers and redundant management servers to ensure recordings are never interrupted and access to the system is always maintained. Discussions are now underway to extend the Axis camera coverage to the university’s Hamilton and Dumfries campuses.

Atul concluded: “This award-winning collaboration is yet another example of how Axis is working closely with it partners to develop its credentials within the education sector which includes other large colleges and universities and across the UK.”

The Security & Fire Excellence Awards are recognised as the 'Oscars' for both the security and fire business sectors as they have consistently broken new ground in highlighting the very best people, projects and processes the UK’s security sector has to offer.

The 2014 award ceremony took place on Thursday 27th November at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, in London and attracted over 1,000 of the industry’s foremost practitioners.
