Biometric fingerprint identification for Cote d'Ivoire voters

Sagem Securite : 29 May, 2008  (Application Story)
Sagem Securite to supply fingerprint identification systems, ID smart cards and voter cards for the republic of the Cote d'Ivoire
Sagem Securite (SAFRAN Group) has been chosen by the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire to manage population and voter registration as well as supply the systems to handle this data. Selected through international competitive bidding, Sagem Securite will carry out these operations jointly with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and the Independent Electoral Board (CEI). 6,000 Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) stations at 11,000 sites will be used to update the citizen and voter registries. Once registries are updated, Sagem Securite will issue 11 million high security ID smart cards (including a chip) and 9 million voter cards.

"Our expertise in biometric identification systems and data security is recognized worldwide, and we are also very experienced in managing large-scale projects of this type," noted Jean-Paul Jainsky, chairman and CEO of Sagem Securite. "We will be providing proven technical resources, as well as the human resources needed to handle project completion, technology transfer, and ensure the long-term viability of our systems."

Patrick Lodola, director of the Identification Solutions program, added: "We are the only prime contractor in the identity management field with expertise in all the areas needed to produce a complete identification system; from smart cards and terminals to encryption and biometrics. Our biometric ID solutions call on advanced algorithms, which have been shown to be the most reliable and interoperable on the market, according to leading certification authorities."

As a recognised expert in biometrics and world leader in automatic fingerprint identification systems, Sagem Sécurité has already produced 100,000 biometric sensors and issued 100 million biometric identity documents in 70 countries. To date, 400 million persons have been registered using Sagem Securite technologies.
