Additional dome cameras installed at pharmaceutical company.

Chubb : 09 May, 2007  (Application Story)
Health care production facility improves security coverage with additional high specification dome cameras from Chubb Electronic Security.
Protecting a large site specialising in the manufacture and development of pharmaceutical products is a considerable responsibility, requiring a comprehensive security solution to deter intruders and restrict access to laboratories.

For Unipath, producers of a comprehensive range of women's health diagnostic products, security at its Bedford headquarters is a key priority, since it is home to 22,000 square feet of Research and Development (R&D) labs and equipment, as well as state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities.

For more than 15 years, Unipath has trusted Chubb Electronic Security to provide all of its electronic security technology on-site, with Chubb recently installing two new high-specification dome cameras to add to the existing 25 internal/external cameras, intruder alarms and access control systems already installed.

"We have a longstanding relationship with Chubb Electronic Security, and are always highly satisfied with the solutions and service it provides," says Geoff Chislett, Site Coordinator at Unipath HQ. "The technology is very straightforward, and easy to use."

The cameras, including the new domes, have been carefully positioned to provide complete coverage of the site in all critical areas. Images from these cameras are transmitted to three flat screen monitors, and monitored locally by a dedicated team of in-house security officers.

"One screen shows images from inside the building, another shows images from outside, while the third screen is used as required. Whereas at one time the images were recorded to video, the system has now been updated to record digitally onto DVD, so when an incident occurs, it is easy and straightforward to pinpoint the date and time and then download the relevant images directly onto a disk," explains Geoff.

"As Unipath is a pharmaceutical company, it is of course extremely important to be able to restrict where people can go. The card-based access control system that Chubb has specified serves as another essential component of the security solution, putting us in control. We have various access levels within the building, entry to which is controlled by a card that also doubles as an ID device.

"The ID cards show the name, department and photo of an employee. At the bottom of the card is a magnetic strip that has to be swiped through a card reader by the doors to gain entry. For supervisors and those at a higher level, it is easy to determine the access levels, and then download this information directly onto their cards. Staff and visitors to the site must get authority to gain access to different areas, thus controlling movement around the building, and maintaining high levels of security.

"I am extremely pleased with the system, and would not hesitate to recommend Chubb or to work with them again.

"The service contracts have been a major factor in our longstanding work with Chubb. I have always been extremely happy with the service received, and the service over the past six to nine months has been particularly good. The Chubb team is highly dedicated and very quick to resolve any issues, so much so that it's like having our own dedicated engineer! For such service, you might expect costs to be high, but we always find the service contracts to be very reasonably priced," concludes Geoff.

Colin Walters, Head of Video Response for Chubb Electronic Security says: "We are delighted to be working so closely with Unipath. Longstanding relationships are valuable, and so while the technology may have changed over the past 15 years, our dedication to providing the best possible solution to the security needs at Unipath has not."

Unipath is one of the world's leading women's health diagnostic companies, achieving recognition for its innovative approach and technological expertise. Unipath is a division of Inverness Medical Innovations of Waltham, Massachusetts and employs more than 500 people in the UK, with additional offices in the US, Sweden and Germany.
