(ISC)2 welcomes appointment of US CyberSecurity co-ordinator

ISC Squared : 24 December, 2009  (Company News)
Appointment of (ISC)2 board member to the US position of Chief of Cybersecurity for the nation is welcome news to the Security Professional Training body
(ISC)2 has announced its support of the appointment of longtime (ISC)2 board member and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Howard Schmidt as the White House cybersecurity coordinator by the Obama administration.

Schmidt has served as board member of (ISC)2, the largest body of information security professionals in the world, since 2004 and as vice chairperson of the board in 2009. Schmidt has also served on (ISC)2's Advisory Board of the Americas since 2005, providing guidance and feedback to (ISC)² executive management on information security policies and trends impacting the industry and profession. In 2008, Schmidt was appointed (ISC)2 security strategist by the board of directors, a role that included providing expert commentary on current information security issues, as well as representing the organization at events and conferences around the world.

"We congratulate Howard on this great honour and fully support the administration in its choice," said W. Hord Tipton, CISSP-ISSEP, CAP, CISA, executive director for (ISC)2. "(ISC)² has worked together with Howard on many important global and national information security workforce initiatives throughout the years and have always valued his insight and counsel."

"We look forward to working with Howard in his new role as he undertakes the critical task of developing the government and national information security workforce program," Tipton said.

Schmidt is also a Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP), a relatively new (ISC)² credential that aims to stem the proliferation of software vulnerabilities by establishing best practices and validating an individual's competency in addressing security issues throughout the software lifecycle. Schmidt was instrumental in advocating the certification in his role on the advisory board.
