Work Zone Awareness Week to modify driver behaviour in road works

American Traffic Solutions : 09 April, 2009  (Technical Article)
ATS is supporting efforts in the USA to reduce the toll on road workers due to drivers speeding through road works
American Traffic Solutions is reminding drivers that April 6-10 is Work Zone Awareness Week. Nearly 1,000 people are killed in roadway work zones each year. Law enforcement has found that speeding in work zones often plays a major factor in many work zone injuries and fatalities. Strong speed enforcement methods in work zones, such as photo enforcement, have a direct result in compliance with following the posted work zone speed limit.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is among the state and local authorities that partner with ATS to reduce work zone crashes and injuries through photo enforcement. In the fall of 2008, WSDOT launched a pilot program using mobile speed enforcement vehicles in work zones.

"We believe adding the work zone speed enforcement cameras to our Give 'em a Brake program will bring speeds down in the work zone and help protect workers and drivers," said Ted Trepanier, WSDOT Traffic Operations Director. "And that showed in a five-week deployment last fall. We had zero work zone incidents through the enforcement area.

"Programs that lower speeds through the work zone are protecting roadway workers, and they are also protecting the drivers and their passengers," Trepanier said.

"Photo enforcement is a proven law enforcement tool that helps reduce violations, crashes and related injuries by modifying driver behaviour," said James Tuton, President and CEO of American Traffic Solutions. "Work Zone Awareness Week serves as a reminder to all drivers that following the posted speed limit in work zones has a direct effect on the safety of construction workers, drivers and passengers."

This year's Work Zone Awareness Week theme is "Drive to Survive - Our Future is Riding on It!" More information on Work Zone Awareness Week is available at the Federal Highway Administration's website.

WSDOT will host its annual Work Zone Memorial Event Thursday, April 23 to honour fallen roadway workers and remind everyone about the importance of work zone safety. They are proud to have the National Work Zone Memorial Wall as part of the 2009 Memorial Event.
