Wireless Online Locking At Nottingham University

Wireless Online Locking At Nottingham University

The University of Nottingham, ranked within the top 1 percent of the Universities worldwide, has chosen the SALTO SALLIS access control solution to provide wireless online locking using their existing personalised RFID cards.

The University of Nottingham is a leading higher education Institution where the 8000 staff and 42,000 students have access to world class teaching, learning and research facilities.

The University has three main United Kingdom campuses with state of the art facilities at University Park, Sutton Bonington, and Jubilee Campus and two International campuses one in Malaysia and one in China.

The University has 5 faculties with a wide range of schools offering over 340 undergraduate courses and 360 postgraduate taught courses. With some 50,000 people this is a large number of people spread across hundreds of buildings to control and keep safe and secure.

With regard to security, the University had a significant number of rooms such as Faculty and Meeting rooms that required a higher level of access control measures than that previously provided by mechanical pin pads or keyed locks.  This continued use of mechanical key locking presented a large overhead in ensuring that PIN codes were changed and keys returned when people moved departments or left the University, in short, the University needed a scalable, cost effective, and functionally robust solution to manage access to these lower traffic areas.

The University carried out trials of several different online wireless locking solutions and SALTO’s SALLIS solution was selected as the most versatile solution due to the functional reliability and flexibility of the SALLIS solution. This is now in place integrated with the existing Nedap AEOS Access Control platform which runs the hard wired access control readers and locks used to secure the campus perimeter and high risk internal areas to some buildings.

Each SALTO SALLIS lock appears within the Nedap AEOS Security Management platform as an entrance alongside conventional wired doors to provide a single user interface and application to manage security permissions regardless of physical door type.  The locks can also take advantage of features built into Nedap’s AEOS, such as providing access remotely and time based automatic unlocking and locking.

In addition, AEOS is able to centrally monitor SALLIS for intrusion, monitor SALLIS infrastructure hardware, and report on the battery status of each lock to enable the pro-active replacement of batteries without inconveniencing end users.

The University uses Nedap’s optional AEOS Rule Engine functionality to automatically assign access permissions based on a series of pre-defined rules and data fields against one’s profile.  The profiles which are obtained directly from the University Staff and Student databases are compared by Rule Engine daily and any changes to access permissions are made immediately if a person’s profile no longer matches a Rule Engine rule.

By incorporating access rules for SALTO’s SALLIS wireless online doors within the existing Nedap Rule Engine functionality, the University are able to extend the security to a much more granular level in these areas.

This method not only provides significant cost savings to the University in both the purchase and installation of wireless locking, but by eliminating unnecessary labour intensive tasks, the workload of the Estates Maintenance Team is reduced allowing them to provide greater value to other areas of the University

The University of Nottingham says “SALTO SALLIS provides us with a high quality secure solution utilising our existing Mifare card in a relatively niche marketplace at affordable value. It has performed better in the limited trail than the current competitors with the wireless solutions now installed in several locations across three large academic buildings with excellent technical backup. However, that said, it is a very fast moving industry with ongoing innovations and product development by other companies and so the University will continue to trail new products. This has been a good solution.”
