Wikileaks Indicates Level Of Insecure Sensitive Data

Lumension Security : 07 December, 2010  (Technical Article)
Lumension comments on the spate of Wikileaks revelations and highlights the growing concerns over sensitive data security
Wikileaks has published a list of 'critical infrastructure and key resources' across the world, as part of a trove of 250,000 cables it is said to have on file. In addition, the website has identified a series of Government involved cyber attacks, as the cat and mouse game over the hosting of the Wikileaks website intensifies.

Alan Bentley, SVP International at Lumension, commented: "The volume of data released by Wikileaks to date highlights the widespread difficulty of protecting classified information assets. Technology has no doubt eased the smuggling of files out of Government organisations - a USB stick is much less noticeable than reams of paper files, for example. The onus is now on organisations to move fast to place restrictions on the ability to access and download classified information.

"However, it is not just the insider risk that Governments need to contend with. Wikileaks has revealed a number of politically motivated cyber attacks, including Chinese cyber attacks against Google designed to steal its source code. We've known for some time that politically motivated cyber attacks are taking place. But it is the fact that these attacks are taking place against private organisations that is alarming.
