WhatsUp Gold network management for Bolton Wanderers.

Ipswitch : 15 April, 2008  (Application Story)
Network diagnostics and management software from Ipswitch installed on 400 port network run by Bolton Wanderers football club.
A founder member of the English football league, Bolton Wanderers Football Club was formed in 1877 and has won the prestigious English FA Cup twice. The club is a permanent fixture of the globally recognised Premier League, in which it competes against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United on a regular basis. The club is also currently competing in the prestigious European UEFA cup competition.

Bolton Wanderers employs around 135 people who work across two main sites. The club understands that a secure and reliable network infrastructure is key to its ongoing financial success. "Our network is fundamental in the day to day workings of the business of football," explains Bolton Wanderers Football Club IT Manager, David Atkinson. "Both internal communication among colleagues and external communication with fans, sponsors, governing bodies and the press are required on a daily basis."

Bolton Wanderers had previously used the free network management applications that came with the 16 Power over Ethernet Cisco switches that make up the core of its network infrastructure. However, following an upgrade of its network, it realised that it required a specialised robust network management product to ensure its communications could operate smoothly.

Atkinson purchased a copy of Ipswitch's award-winning network management solution WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition to provide visibility of all the 400 ports on its network. "WhatsUp Gold provides an immediate notification of network errors, outage of hardware and has the ability to pinpoint exactly where the error has occurred at a very early stage," comments Atkinson.

WhatsUp Gold v11 Premium includes various key enhancements to Ipswitch's flagship network monitoring solution, which is used to monitor over 50,000 networks worldwide. These include a new Web application, workspaces with over 100 customisable reports and enhanced IPv6 monitoring, giving the product far more functionality and capabilities than comparably priced network monitoring solutions.

Designed for organisations that need to monitor their single-location network 24/7, WhatsUp Gold Premium can be implemented in any environment in under one hour and enables companies such as Bolton Wanderers to discover its network in minutes. All network information is stored in a relational database to enable easy and efficient device management and reporting.

WhatsUp Gold Premium can monitor and report on any SNMP parameter and can import any Management Information Base (MIB) file with drag-and-drop ease. All of Bolton Wanderers' business-critical hardware devices such as servers, firewalls, routers, switches and printers, in addition to its hard disk and CPU utilisation, are monitored by Ipswitch's WhatsUp Gold Premium. The team views the tool on a 42-inch plasma TV screen giving clear visibility of all devices at a glance.

"We set up device dependencies which enable us to more easily diagnose the problem without the distraction of numerous alerts," comments Atkinson. "However, when there is an outage I can be contacted immediately, via a WhatsUp Gold email alert to my BlackBerry, even if it is out of office hours."

Through WhatsUp Gold Premium, Atkinson has set up a number of automatic scripts that can restart services using specific policies. "This helps massively when a small problem happens outside of business hours," enthuses Atkinson. "All in all, WhatsUp Gold will certainly save us time and money by assisting us in diagnosing issues quicker."

"The goal for any IT Manager is to better understand and manage their corporate network. WhatsUp Gold Premium has given Bolton Wanderers greater real time visibility of its network and ensured that it can concentrate on continuing to generate success on the pitch," adds Ipswitch Regional Sales Manager, Mike Silva.
