Webroot supports network neutrality proposals

Webroot Software : 23 September, 2009  (Technical Article)
EMEA Channel Manager from Webroot comments on the recent proposal to demand respect for net neutrality from internet companies
In response to the US proposition for new rules that would require internet firms to respect the principle of network neutrality, Ian Moyse, EMEA Channel Manager, Webroot, a provider of internet security solutions for enterprise, consumer and SMEs, said, "At Webroot, we very much support net neutrality. Internet regulation or lack of it (openness) will not be decided by any individual organisation, or region, or regulatory body. There will be mixed policies, legalities and interpretations. Yet, whatever the result of these choices or imposed selections, businesses will still want to own their own destiny.

He continued, "They will want to manage their own bandwidth, know and control what comes down their pipe and when and who can access it. Regardless of the decisions at governmental levels, businesses will need and want to control their own traffic and with more and more mobile users becoming the norm, managing this will continue to become an "in the cloud" issue.

"Customers will seek and need internet level controls that allow them to stem the flow of large bandwidth eating usage such as streaming video, audio and large downloads both to their networks and also across their mobile user base," he said. "Internet level web filtering services are expected to grow from 1% of the market to 25% of the market over the next 3 years according to Gartner and with limitations on network web filtering solutions to solve the mobile and bandwidth issues effectively, web cloud services are clearly the solution to address both the customer needs and the unknown outcome of the internet level policies being decided - and now out of the individual customers hands."
