Web based e-mail protection for Chelmsford Council.

Forcepoint : 05 March, 2008  (Application Story)
IT security for inbound e-mails to Chelsford Council to be supplied as a hosted service in contract with Websense.
Websense has announced that Chelmsford Borough Council has chosen its Websense Hosted Email Security service to provide comprehensive e-mail protection for Council staff. The three year contract for approximately 1000 users was signed in December 2007, following a major review of e-mail infrastructure by the Council's IT department and a competitive tender process. Websense Hosted Email Security is already fully deployed following a brief evaluation for testing. The service identifies and stops spam and e-mail borne viruses, phishing attacks and other malware at the Internet level. This then reduces the administrative costs and time of troubleshooting unwanted e-mail on the network.

Chelmsford Borough Council selected Websense for its proven technology track record, ease of use, simplicity, resilience, granular reporting tools and low administrative overhead costs. The Websense solution replaces the on site e-mail security software used by the Council which was stopping approximately 50% of spam, resulting in high helpdesk call volumes and overhead costs. Already, the new hosted service has vastly improved spam filtering rates, identifying an average of 75-80% of total e-mail volume as spam and preventing it from ever reaching the Council's IT network.

"We wanted to make our internal e-mail structure as cost-effective and straightforward as possible and ultimately we decided that the Websense solution best fitted our business needs," explains Dan Prendergast, senior technical analyst, Corporate Services, Chelmsford Borough Council. "We are implementing a layered approach to security at the Council and consolidating the number of providers we work with. This is the first time we have used a hosted service that provides e-mail security away from our network, and this has delivered an immediate return on investment - including a dramatic decrease in helpdesk calls relating to spam e-mails."

Another key reason that Chelmsford Borough Council chose Websense was for the detailed granular reporting functionality coupled with a comprehensive search message centre. These are available to individual e-mail users to check their own spam filters, resulting in far less time and cost in administering e-mail centrally.

"Using a hosted service also enables us to be more productive as an IT department; by taking away the time involved with managing e-mails, the IT team can focus on other priorities, safe in the knowledge that staff are protected. We are a small department and it makes good sense for our staff to be able to administer their own e-mail filters," adds Prendergaast.

"As Chelmsford Borough Council is an existing customer, we are delighted it has chosen to use Websense for e-mail security after a comprehensive and competitive evaluation process," said Pat Dunne, senior director, UK and Ireland, Websense. "The service has already delivered the specific business benefits that the customer needed in a short time span, including full business continuity: even if the Council's Internet temporarily goes down, our hosted service is still available to filter e-mail."

Websense Hosted Email Security was delivered to Chelmsford Borough Council through reseller partner Secon.

"One of the key decisions that Chelmsford Borough Council had to make was whether they would upgrade their on site software, or opt for a hosted service. We worked alongside Websense to fully understand the business needs of the Council, to find the solution that was the best fit for their specific requirements," comments Robert Gupta, managing director, Secon.

Websense Hosted Email Security is guaranteed by industry recognised Service Level Agreements, including blocking all known viruses and nearly 100% of spam. The service is powered by Websense ThreatSeeker technology that pre-emptively seeks out and blocks emerging Web based threats at source, providing an additional level of protection against blended security threats. Chelmsford Borough Council is also currently evaluating Websense Web security products.
