Video wall installed in Belgian railway project

Barco : 01 December, 2008  (Application Story)
Belgian railway signalling control room fitted with video wall in joint project between Barco and Siemens
Siemens and Barco have met a second milestone of Infrabel's project to modernize the Belgian railway's signaling boxes. Siemens, leader of the temporary consortium Belgosignal (Siemens and Alstom), and visualization specialist Barco successfully installed a rear-projected video wall in Infrabel's signaling center in Namur, Belgium. The center was officially inaugurated on 28 November by Infrabel's CEO Mr Lallemand. By 2012, Barco and Siemens will install another 12 video walls in Infrabel's signaling centers across Belgium.

"In our quest to establish optimal traffic management across the Belgian railway infrastructure network, we decided to install large-screen display systems in our Belgian signaling centers", says Infrabel's CEO Luc Lallemand. "We are very pleased to officially inaugurate our signaling center in Namur, the first one in Wallonie equipped with the video wall, just a few months after the similar successful operation in Bruges."

Under the terms of the current agreement (Belgosignal), Barco and Siemens take responsibility for the study, supply, installation and maintenance of in total 14 rear projection video walls.

Siemens' visualization system EBP (Elektronische Bedien posten - Poste à Logique Programmée) is being installed progressively in the signal boxes at Infrabel since 1992.

Pol Caby, Business Unit Manager Transportation Systems - Intelligent Traffic Solutions, at Siemens: "Coupled with a large-screen Barco display, our EBP system presents operators with all key information at a glance and facilitates them to guide rail traffic safely and efficiently."

"We have been working with Siemens for almost a year now to deliver a modular traffic monitoring solution and today's opening testifies to the smooth and efficient cooperation between two business leaders in serving Infrabel's mission-critical operations, says Stephan Heirbrant, Sales Manager Benelux at Barco's Security & Monitoring Division. "The video-wall is rapidly integrated thanks to the flexibility of the EBP system architecture and Barco's open interfaces."

Barco's traffic monitoring solution is an advanced visualization solution for traffic monitoring and control. The company's OverView D series integrate cutting edge DLPâ„¢ technology into video wall systems that are designed and optimized for use in a 24/7 mission-critical environments.. The latest generation graphic controllers, combined with universal decoders, allow for virtually unlimited integration of data and video sources into one comprehensive overview.

Siemens EBP system is delivering the necessary information's and images to the Barco system. The EBP system is a development entirely done by Siemens Belgium in close collaboration with Infrabel and is using fault redundant computers with very high availability that guarantees continuous operation of the system. The system works closely together with Alstom interlocking systems which ensure all safety rules and interfacing.
