USB security device for NHS records

Softek : 15 July, 2008  (New Product)
NHS Lothian deploys SafeStick to safeguard patient data and prevent leakage of private patient information
BlockMaster AB has announced that its SafeStick drives are now being deployed by the NHS as a reassurance that patient information is not compromised again.

The BBC reported on July 3 that a staff worker at NHS Lothian lost a memory stick containing sensitive patient information. The staff worker now faces disciplinary action, and a solution is actively being deployed within the Trust to ensure that information is not compromised again.

James Norman, associate director of George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, said, 'SafeStick drives are now being deployed throughout the whole Trust, replacing existing memory sticks, thus providing reassurance that should any fall into the wrong hands, the data held on them will be safe from unauthorised disclosure.'

SafeStick is a secure USB flash drive made by IT security company BlockMaster. It encrypts and password-protects all information stored on the drive. SafeStick is used by companies around the world in all industries to protect portable information. The hardware protection ensures that only the rightful owner can access information stored on the SafeStick. By replacing existing memory sticks with the SafeStick, NHS will never again have these problems.

'We were impressed with SafeStick because of the level of security it offered, as well as its ease of use and value,' Norman said.

A Labour Party spokesman told the BBC, 'Data protection should be a priority, as patient confidentiality must always be one of the foremost considerations at all levels of health service.'
