Unified firewall protection for small businesses

ZyXEL Communications : 13 August, 2008  (New Product)
USG range of products from ZyXEL provide network security for small businesses with VPN access control and secure site to site communications
ZyXEL Communications (ZyXEL) launches the latest in its Unified Security Gateway (USG) Firewall product range, the USG100 and USG200. The two newest additions complement the existing USG300 and USG1000, providing reliable site-to-site connections, secure VPN access, and watertight networking for small businesses.

The new products provide smaller businesses (between five and 50 network users) with the next generation of Unified Threat Management (UTM) technology. Both USG100 and USG200 deliver enterprise-level advanced security but at a much lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than multi-device solutions. A Unified Security Gateway is the next evolutionary step on from the UTM Firewalls and is an ideal solution for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) looking to deliver security, protection and remote connectivity for their network using a single device.

UK SMBs are currently seeing significant changes to the way they use their networks. For example, remote working, the increased use of hosted applications, and Web 2.0 services have heightened the risk of network breaches. Remote working increases the number of Internet 'breakouts' on a corporate network - unless properly secured, these breakouts provide opportunities for hackers and unauthorised network access. SMBs are taking these rising security threats seriously, with recent research highlighting that 70% of SMBs have increased security budgets for 20081.

James Edwards, Product Manager at ZyXEL, explains, "There is a constant increase in the number of security threats that SMBs are facing, and it is often difficult to effectively combat all of them, either because of technology or budget constraints. ZyXEL's new USG devices have been designed with smaller businesses in mind. We have made it easier to deliver the highest levels of protection across the entire network and reduce the number of devices needed in order to achieve it."

For those companies considering how to increase their security levels, the USG offers a number of benefits:.

*Scalability - the device enables up to 50 users (up to 100 or 200+ users through the USG300 and USG1000 respectively) to be connected using a single licence.
*Free firmware enhancements for the life of their products.
*Free UK technical support.

The USG also allows the management of a security policy across multiple 'branch' offices, and enables remote workers to be securely connected to a corporate infrastructure. Both products use a hybrid VPN - this means they can simultaneously connect to both the SSL VPN and IPSec VPN - allowing reliable site-to-site network connections, which is particularly useful if the company network needs to expand.

In addition, both have been designed to enable a standby unit to run side-by-side for High Availability (HA). If one device fails, then the backup takes over automatically, ensuring the VPN tunnels remain fully operational at all times. With a combination of more advanced and customisable Anti-Virus, 3G support, intrusion detection and prevention, plus optional ZyAssure Support Packs, the USG100 and USG200 ensure piece of mind for SMBs.

Nick Gallafent, Technical Director at distributor Electronic Frontier Ltd, commented, "ZyXEL's new USG devices represent a significant leap in terms of performance and functionality, and give SMBs easy access to enterprise-class features, such as SSL-VPN, Device High-Availability and Two-Factor Authentication.

"Active Directory integration also makes it possible for businesses to enforce acceptable use policies, limiting non-work related Internet activities, saving lost working hours and bandwidth."
