Understated Microsoft patches a necessity says Lumension.

Lumension Security : 09 November, 2007  (Technical Article)
Seemingly light month for patches hides two essential actions to protect against Microsoft Windows vulnerabilities.
In its pre-Patch Tuesday posting, Microsoft's Security Bulletin predicts only two vulnerabilities - one critical and one important. They address vulnerabilities in Windows Versions 2003 and XP and Windows Server 2003.

Alan Bentley, VP of Lumension Security EMEA (formerly PatchLink):

"It seems that November will be a relatively light month in terms of security warnings, but users should not be complacent. It it's first bulletin (remote code execution), Microsoft has given a "critical" rating, the highest of its severity warnings, as typically attackers can take over control of an entire system without any user interaction.

"The second posting, described as "important", is a spoofing vulnerability. This enables attackers to mask the identities of phishing web sites in Internet Explorer's task bar. Users are then lured to these sites under false pretences. The vulnerability affects only Windows Server 2003 systems.

"Computer users don't need to just think about the two patches Microsoft has pre-announced. They should also pay serious attention to the several patches that Apple released earlier this week."
