Traffic enforcement cameras for small New Jersey town

American Traffic Solutions : 08 September, 2008  (Application Story)
Police in Woodbridge, New Jersey to reduce red light jumping in the town with the help of camera systems from American Traffic Solutions
The Woodbridge Township (New Jersey) Municipal Council approved a resolution to apply for participation in a five-year pilot with the New Jersey Department of Transportation Red-Light Running Automated Enforcement Program. Upon State approval, the resolution selected American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to run the Township's red-light photo-enforcement program.

"Woodbridge Township has explored the possibility of implementing red-light cameras since the state approved legislation last year establishing the pilot program," said Woodbridge Township Mayor John McCormac. "We are exploring the installation of the red-light camera system along Route 1, which is one of the most heavily travelled corridors in New Jersey. Our goal is to improve safety, reduce crashes and improve the flow of traffic moving through the heavily congested corridor. To accomplish our public safety mission, we are seeking the best possible technology to implement the system."

Just a 40-minute trip from New York City, Woodbridge has been a meeting place for people since 1664. It is the oldest incorporated community in New Jersey, and the fifth largest municipality in the state with a population of more than 106,000. The Township consists of 10 communities -- Avenel, Colonia, Fords, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keasbey, Menlo Park Terrace, Port Reading, Sewaren, and Woodbridge proper.

ATS serves more than 120 communities across the country with photo-enforcement programs in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.

New York City's red-light camera program has seen a 73 percent reduction in violations between 1994 and 2005. According to a 2007 study completed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers tallied signal violations at intersections in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before and after red-light camera enforcement had been in effect for about one year and found the cameras reduced violations by 96 percent.
