Tiered SAM Certification Scheme Now At Preview Stage

The Federation Against Software Theft : 09 December, 2010  (Company News)
The Federation Against Software Theft has made further progress on the introduction of the tiered certification for Software Asset Management
The working group on Software Asset Management standards announcement that it is previewing the new standard - ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7 WG 21, has been welcomed by FAST IiS.

"This new industry-wide Certification for Software Asset Management (SAM) has taken a major step forward with a new Tiered Scheme which we have already backed publicly," stated John Lovelock, chief executive of FAST IiS.

Addressing the call for harmonious world-class SAM practices, the revision now includes four successive tiers to serve as a common language for software asset management programs.

TSS trials focus on trustworthy data, the starting point for optimal use of software and licence assets, and for driving savings through IT service management. In particular, with 19770 Tier 1, an organisation can now achieve best-in-class by targeting a few vital process areas, including inventory management, verification and licence compliance reconciliation.

John Lovelock, Chief Executive of The Federation Against Software Theft and Investors in Software (FAST IiS) added: "Corporate UK is yet to fully realise the significant benefits that can be achieved through tools and process implementation for an effective SAM solution, such as reduced compliance risks, controlling software costs and reduced labour costs to manage software,"

"Both cost and risk can be reduced by implementing the right processes. Companies cannot financially afford to continue to over-purchase software licenses in this climate and legally cannot risk under-purchasing. These have to be the most compelling arguments for adopting effective SAM policies in the current market," he continued.

"The established ISO/IEC 19770-1 SAM Standard is evolving to offer more accessible tiers so FAST IiS endorsement is very timely. With the next generation 19770-1 approach from the ISO/IEC standards committee, organisations can now readily evaluate and demonstrate the high-priority processes: just the parts of SAM recognised for Tier 1 attainment of the ISO SAM standard. CFOs and Exec-sponsors of SAM will warm to industry endorsement of one assessment scheme for certification, aligned with 19770-1 tiers. Together this answers industry demands for recognising reliable and repeatable Trustworthy Data on software and related IT assets," concluded John Lovelock.

The feedback period continues until 01 March 2011, reviewers are encouraged to complete their analysis and provide feedback as soon as possible. A summary of the feedback - to be published in May 2011, will be sent to reviewers who provide contact information.
