Tape drive backup for Windows environments

Zen Software : 28 September, 2009  (New Product)
BackupAssist fills the gap left by Windows for the utilisation of tape based back-up solutions, enabling MS Windows users to continue taking advantage of their investment in tape drives
Australian developer Cortex IT, has announced the release of version 5.3.0 of BackupAssist, their Windows based backup software for small businesses.

BackupAssist has long been making use of the built-in backup features to offer best value to its customers, but when Microsoft chose not to include NTbackup in their later Windows versions, many users with tape drives were left crying out for a solution that would prevent them from having to abandon their often costly tape drive hardware.

BackupAssist version 5.3.0 claims to provide the answer with both an all new Zip engine, and a Zip-to-tape plug-in. Users of Windows Vista, 2008 or SBS 2008 machines can now backup to any destination previously possible with NTbackup, including FTP, DVD, REV and tape, with the added convenience of Zip file compression.

Other new features in this new release are support for Exchange 2007, including the ability to back up individual or group emails, entire mailboxes, calendars, tasks, notes and contacts. This release also sees a significant overhaul to the file restore interface, making it even easier to use, with a familiar Explorer-style window and powerful search facility.

James Steel, Product Manager at Zen Software, the UK & Ireland distributor for Cortex products, says: 'BackupAssist offers a one stop solution for small businesses with even the most niche of requirements. Many of these companies have made significant investment into tape drive hardware so it's important we can offer them a choice rather than forcing the decision to upgrade. Above all we're excited to see BackupAssist add another string to its bow and strengthen its position as a viable alternative to the market leading products.'

BackupAssist backup software starts at £139 and is suitable for both small and medium sized businesses. The product set consists of the main BackupAssist application and plug-ins for Rysnc, Exchange, SQL, open files and now Zip-to-tape. Sales, technical and marketing support are provided by distributor Zen Software.
