Surveillance system protects church roof from metal theft

Videoswitch : 26 September, 2008  (Application Story)
Low cost CCTV surveillance linked to Vi series DVR from Videoswitch to act as deterrent to metal thieves attracted by lead roof at historic church
Surveillance system protects church roof from metal theft
Nova Security has come to the aid of St. Mary's Church, Warkworth by providing a CCTV solution to protect the church's lead roof.

"The continuing rise in the price of metal has meant that churches in remote locations such as St. Mary's are sadly attracting the attention of thieves," said Spencer Tear a Director of Nova Security. "St. Mary's roof had been stripped by thieves and the cost of replacing a section of the roof ran into several thousands of pounds. Clearly something had to be done to deter the thieves and as the church had limited funds, we formed a partnership with Videoswitch to provide an affordable CCTV system."

The images from the cameras installed by Northampton based CCTV specialist Nova Security, are recorded onto a DVR from Videoswitch's Vi series. "We installed the cameras high up so that all activity around the church roofs could be observed," added Spencer Tear. "Taking into account the age of the building, we also had special brackets made to ensure the cameras were fully supported."

St. Mary's is a 13th century mediaeval church originally built as a chapel for Warkworth castle, the home of crusader knight, Sir John de Lyon. The castle only lasted until 1806 when it was sold and demolished whilst St. Mary's has continued to service the communities of Overthorpe and Warkworth.

A Churchwarden on behalf of St Mary's said: "We are extremely grateful to Nova Security and Videoswitch for their generous support in helping us to deter thieves. After only having the system for two weeks there is already evidence that we have prevented another possible theft of the lead from our roof. We are delighted, to say the least."
