Storm worm used for large scale bank phishing.

Fortinet : 08 January, 2008  (Technical Article)
Phishers have kicked off 2008 with a sophisticated phishing scam using the Storm Worm botnet aimed at Barclays customers.
The Fortinet threat response team has been hard at work this week with the team having just discovered that the Storm Worm Botnet is at the core of a new phishing activity specifically targeting Barclays bank customers.

This latest discovery marks the latest milestone in Storm's evolution as the huge peer-to-peer Botnet runs amok with Barclay's customers. Breaking away from spreading stock spam on a massive scale, Storm has now turned towards far more dangerous activity. The latest phishing attempt targets vulnerable users of Barclay's online banking service, prompting them to click on a link in order for Barclays to review its member's accounts, ironically to reduce the risk of fraud!

Interestingly, whilst this activity is a first for the Storm botnet, the social engineering hook that is used here was identified several years ago - indicating that it has most likely been dug up from an old phishing kit.

Fortinet has published a full advisory that explains this is more detail and includes an example of this phishing attempt.

There has been speculation about how cybercriminals were going to make use of the Storm Worm this year, but it seems that this is the first activity that's been spotted for 2008.
