SSL VPN support for Astaro Gateway

Astaro : 02 March, 2009  (New Product)
Gateway 7.4 enhances network security with new features including SSL VPN support and multiple internet connections
Astaro has announced the availability of version 7.4 of its Astaro Gateway product offering. The new appliance update boasts more than 200 new security features, providing SMEs with an enhanced suite of tools for protecting their business. New features include HTTPS URL Filtering, Wide Area Network (WAN) link balancing and site-to-site SSL VPN capabilities. The update covers Astaro's unified threat management (UTM) appliance series as well as its specialised mail and web gateway products.

The 7.4 release features WAN link balancing which allows businesses to consolidate up to eight individual Internet connections into a single pipe, which can be automatically balanced for better performance and lower cost. Using multiple smaller Internet connections can provide a large cost saving as opposed to a single larger dedicated connection, while also providing greater redundancy. Administrators can set specific rules for how traffic will use the connections, and the Astaro appliance provides intelligent, automatic fail-over in the event of an outage.

The new filtering engine in version 7.4 also allows users to filter and control secure web traffic (HTTPS). The Astaro Gateway intercepts encrypted HTTPS traffic and examines the content for malware, stops spyware infections, and controls the types of sites that can be accessed. This allows organisations to prevent the use of popular SSL tunneling programs like Ultrasurf that are used to bypass web security policies and evade web filter lists.

"SSL tunneling applications are used to access sites that would otherwise be blocked. We are seeing increased use in environments like schools, where students physically bring in programs on USB sticks and use them to circumvent security," explained Jan Hichert, Astaro CEO. "The portability of these programs, combined with their use of HTTPS introduces a serious risk of infection or a student accessing inappropriate material. Teachers are even using these programs to surf freely on their breaks. The HTTPS URL Filtering provided by Astaro prevents these applications from hiding browsing activity, and more importantly stops any risk of malware being downloaded. This is now a necessity for a secure network."

The new release also extends Astaro's SSL VPN technology, allowing users to create permanent site-to-site tunnels between Astaro Gateways. Using site-to-site SSL VPN tunnels provides a simpler means for permanently connecting two Gateways while keeping the security level of an IPsec VPN. Version 7.4 includes many other new features and improvements that have been requested by partners and users over the past few months, such as report exports in PDF and CSV format and support for Cisco's IPsec VPN client.
