Sourcefire network behaviour analysis for Swiss University.

Sourcefire : 12 November, 2007  (Application Story)
Swiss technology institute secures network activity of over 18,000 users with real time network awareness and behavioural analysis technology.
Open source innovator and Snort creator, Sourcefire has announced that the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), one of the top international science and technology universities, attended by the Nobel Laureate Albert Einstein, has chosen Sourcefire to help them gain a better control of their network.

ETH Zurich has over 18,000 people from 80 nations that study, research or work at the university and consequently providing the very best security services for the institution's network is paramount. It is essential to provide a reliable, quality network in an ever-changing and expanding infrastructure.

Sourcefire RNA (Real-time Network Awareness) monitoring technology helps ensure that any systems that attach to the network comply with corporate configuration and usage policies. The benefits delivered by this leading Network Behaviour Analysis (NBA) solution led Stephen Sheridan, who heads the Network Security Group at ETH, to investigate the potential of the Sourcefire 3D System.

The University's Network Security Group is responsible for providing quality of service in the network through intrusion detection, monitoring for breach of policy, incident handling, internal consulting and auditing. Being able to combine the functionality of Sourcefire RNA with Snort open source intrusion prevention and detection technology which was already being used at the University was a deciding factor for the Network Security Group.

Sourcefire's Enterprise Threat Management (ETM) solution helps defend the network before, during and after an attack with its four technologies - Intrusion Prevention (IPS), Network Behaviour Analysis, Network Access Control (NAC) and Vulnerability Assessment. Sourcefire is the first network security vendor to integrate all four ETM components under the same management console, giving customers both a more efficient and more effective means for defending complex networks against today's most costly threats.

Stephen Sheridan comments, "The Sourcefire 3D System has many features and it helped us to determine what we have in the network, what is active and what can be done with it. The sales and support advice from the Sourcefire team has assisted us tremendously in getting us up-and-running quickly with the product".
