Small businesses warned to check the legality of their workers

TSSI Systems : 28 August, 2009  (Technical Article)
TSSI Systems is advising UK high street businesses to use inexpensive tools for checking document authenticity of workers prior to hiring them in order to avoid hefty penalties
Personal identity expert TSSI Systems warns how the recent swoop on unauthorised workers in the High Street could put many out of business.

John Barker, General Manager, TSSI, said: "Civil penalties are no longer just a vague threat that traders think they're safe from. Ignorance is no excuse, the UK Border Agency means business and with immigration officers stalking the High Street, shop owners, take away managers and restaurant chain bosses need to check up on their workforce or face hefty fines which could seriously dent their profits."

"If you're running a business and you have some uncertified employees on board you can expect to pay up to £10,000 per staff member if you're caught out. With the High Street in dire straits thanks to today's ailing economy, nobody can afford these penalties."

"There are tools on the market that allow anybody recruiting staff to check if they are eligible to work in the UK by verifying the authenticity of their passport, driving licence or visa documents. This is a small price to pay for any company wishing to stay in business!"
