Single server end-to-end endpoint management

Lumension Security : 23 November, 2009  (New Product)
Lumension Endpoint Management and Security Suite improves security and compliance while making life simpler for IT Administrators
Lumension has announced its comprehensive Lumension Endpoint Management Platform (LEMP) strategy that will deliver tighter integrations and workflows across IT security and operations to help organizations optimize security and compliance posture, reduce technology complexity and decrease TCO. As part of this platform launch, Lumension will be releasing its Lumension Endpoint Management and Security Suite (LEMSS), which includes initial product capabilities across integrated vulnerability management and security configuration management to deliver greater agility, security and compliance.

According to a recent Ponemon Institute survey commissioned by Lumension, titled Worldwide State of the Endpoint 2010, collaboration between security and operations is considered poor or non-existent by 53 percent of IT security and 38 percent of IT operations practitioners. Further, a majority of IT security and IT operations executives said they feel less secure today than a year ago as a result of complexities in disparate technologies. According to the survey findings, the top three challenges in endpoint management are improving security posture, reducing costs and decreasing complexity. Current challenges are compounded by the growing gaps within IT operations and security groups that have been slow to adapt to the evolving endpoint security risks and approaches, adding to the inflexible and high-risk IT environments that exist today.

The company's strategy is underpinned by Lumension's unique strength across its foundational assets in vulnerability management, application whitelisting, data encryption, device management, compliance and IT risk management, and security and operational content.

"Today's security landscape has fundamentally shifted," said Pat Clawson, Chairman and CEO of Lumension. "As financially motivated attackers continually develop increasingly clever and stealthy means of compromising systems and stealing confidential data, businesses need to wake up to the reality that the old threat-centric approach is no longer effective against a new generation of attacks. The industry's traditional approach to IT security has remained the same — very threat-centric. Organizations continue to add to an existing stack of niche technologies to address individual threats and compliance issues, which only exacerbates the problem with limited risk visibility and policy enforcement, resulting in increasing overall TCO.

"Today's approach requires a combination of things to be successful. First and foremost, organizations need to break down the silos between the security and operations groups and open up the channels of communication and visibility. By doing this, you can start to build a more holistic and collaborative approach to endpoint management and security by tightly integrating processes and policies with enabling technologies and people," continued Clawson.

"Security vendors are starting to understand that they need 'operations' expertise and tools … to maintain increasingly complex Endpoint Protection Platforms," said Peter Firstbrook, research director, Gartner Inc. "By 2011, leading enterprise endpoint protection platform and PC lifecycle management vendors will offer mature integrated security and operations tools. IT organizations should understand the benefits of these tools and develop a strategy for adoption. Operations tools that address more than just the security status of the EPP suite provide for a more holistic view of the potential attack surface of endpoints."1

Lumension believes its Endpoint Management Platform will provide an agile and scalable architecture that allows organizations to achieve lower TCO, greater agility, and enhanced security and compliance posture through consolidation, optimization and automation. Lumension's approach to endpoint management is centered on these key strategic areas:

With the dynamic shift in the IT environment, organizations need to move from a threat-centric approach to trust-centric model. Lumension will focus on establishing a trusted ecosystem where all changes are analyzed against a dynamic "trust engine" around multiple variables such as trusted updater, installer and publisher. The result will be a convergence of protection leveraging blacklisting, whitelisting, trusted change and security configurations to ensure endpoints are protected from vulnerabilities and running in a trusted state that eliminates malicious or unwanted elements.

Lumension's extensible platform architecture is expected to provide consolidated management infrastructure, visibility and control across highly complex, distributed IT environments. The Lumension Endpoint Management Platform will be designed to leverage common messaging and distributed service delivery to provide a wide range of modular products through a single promotable agent and management console. In addition to the consolidated delivery of both operational and security services for the endpoint, Lumension Endpoint Management Platform is planned to support distributed environments via flexible N-tier distribution services. Lumension expects the new architecture to provide customers with improved scalability, adaptability and ease of integration, allowing them to gain centralized visibility and real-time control across mobile and distributed IT environments.

Building off its recent announcement of the Lumension Endpoint Integrity Service and the company's unique position in managing many different types of endpoint content — both operational- and security-oriented — Lumension plans to expand cloud-based content services, which will provide an intelligent approach to application identification and assurance while delivering impact analysis for endpoint operations and security decisions. Through this unified relational approach to content, the Lumension Endpoint Management Platform will be designed to proactively alert on the security impact of operational actions (such as new vulnerabilities introduced by newly deployed software) and the operational impact of security actions (such as operational impact to security configuration changes.)

Lumension intends to deliver its Endpoint Management Platform capabilities through its newly integrated Lumension Endpoint Management and Security Suite, delivering a single integrated management console with solution capabilities that span operations, security and IT Risk Management to provide a comprehensive endpoint management solution that improves security and compliance posture while reducing overall IT risk and TCO. The unified and streamlined console workflow will provide centralized visibility and control, while reducing the overhead and complexity associated with multiple-point products and solutions.

Lumension's modularly licensed suite capabilities are planned to include:

* Endpoint Operations
* Vulnerability Management
* Endpoint Protection
* Data Protection
* Compliance and IT Risk Management

Lumension is scheduled to bring to market the first phase of its new platform strategy with the general availability of Lumension Endpoint Management and Security Suite in November 2009. This initial solution suite will include elements of Lumension's single-agent architecture and two of its leading product modules (Lumension Patch & Remediation and Lumension Security Configuration Management) with plans to release additional product functionality throughout 2010.
