Service provider chooses 3D System from Sourcefire

Sourcefire : 10 April, 2009  (Application Story)
KCOM Group is employing real time network awareness technology from Sourcefire to provide network wide visibility
Open source innovator and Snort creator, Sourcefire has announced that KCOM Group PLC has chosen Sourcefire RNA (Real-time Network Awareness), to provide network visibility across its carrier Next Generation Network (NGN).

KCOM is installing the 3D System to meet the security requirements necessary in delivering NGN services to regulated industries, such as public sector and financial organisations, and to provide assurance that a certain level of security and availability are maintained.

KCOM views having added protection for its NGN service delivery network as an absolute necessity, helping it to stand out from the competition. KCOM is keen to demonstrate that it is following best practices and expects a definite return on investment in terms of added business and efficiency improvements.

The Sourcefire 3D System is unique as it collects all network data in the Sourcefire Defence Centre, so that when an intrusion or other incident is identified, the 3D System uses the threat data and network intelligence gathered by RNA to determine if the threat is real and if so, sends an instantaneous email alert to the security team.

KCOM chose Sourcefire 3D since other systems can swamp you with false positives. The Sourcefire 3D advantage is that it provides network intelligence and impact flagging, so that users know what is important and needs to be attended to. This reduces the pressure on the security team, which will help deliver efficiency gains and reduce KCOM's future operational overhead and resourcing expenses.

KCOM is currently at the implementation stage, and the company intends to roll out additional 3D Sensors later this year. The company also owns and operates three Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Eclipse, Karoo and Kingston Communications, and is investigating placing 3D Sensors within these environments to enhance protection.
