Semafone Partnership Delivers Fraud Prevention To Call Centre Industry

NuBridges : 26 January, 2011  (Company News)
nuBridges and Semafone reach partnership deal to bring payment security technology and tokenisation to the call centre industry for the detection and prevention of fraud
nuBridges is partnering with UK-based Semafone to deliver innovative new data protection solutions to the call centre industry. Semafone’s payment security technology, which protects credit card numbers taken by telephone to combat call centre fraud, has been integrated with nuBridges Protect Token Manager, nuBridges’ industry-leading Format Preserving Tokenisation solution.

This integration allows call centres utilizing Semafone on-premise or in-the-cloud solutions to mask and tokenise credit card numbers taken over the phone. The enhanced capabilities improve cardholder protection and take order entry systems and other applications out of scope for the Payment Card Industry’s Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance and audits.

“Payment card security is a critical issue for any organisation with a brand reputation to protect,” said David Jackson, Semafone founder. “By adding tokenisation to Semafone, we not only better protect cardholder information throughout the organization but also take entire systems, applications and databases out of scope for PCI audits.”

Barclaycard, one of Europe’s largest acquirers and processors of card transactions, is very prominent in promoting security in the payment value chain. As a member of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard Board of Advisors, Barclaycard advises its customers to assess the suitability for their environment of risk mitigation technologies such as tokenisation to help them become more secure.

“Call centres are an often overlooked area when trying to comply with the PCI standards,” said Neira Jones, head of payment security at Barclaycard. “The good news is that tokenisation and innovative secure call centre technologies can make a big difference in securing credit cards and reducing call centre fraud.”

Semafone’s dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) technology works by allowing customers to enter credit card data via their telephone keypad instead of speaking it over the phone. The data is masked by the software and sent directly to the payment portal, which means the customer service agent does not hear it, does not see it and cannot repeat it. Moreover, the information is not held on the organisation’s database systems, which significantly reduces scope for PCI compliance and annual audits. The Semafone technology platform was named the 2010 European Call Centre Product of the Year.

nuBridges Protect Token Manager is part of nuBridges Protect, the industry’s first data security software solution to combine Format Preserving Tokenisation with strong local encryption, centralized encryption key management and logging in one platform-agnostic package. nuBridges Protect is designed for organisations that need to protect payment card numbers as well as volumes of personally identifiable information (PII) and electronic health records (EHR) from theft and accidental loss while reducing complexity and simplifying compliance management for data security standards and privacy laws.

With this announcement, Semafone joins the nuBridges Tokenisation Partner Program, launched in March of last year. . Participation in the program enables software application vendors to help their customers gain an extra layer of data security; reduce PCI audit scope and the initial and annual costs of PCI DSS compliance and audits; and to expand beyond payment card number protection to protect any type of sensitive and confidential information. For applications that already have web services interfaces, sandbox testing can usually be completed in hours. Qualified software vendors are invited to join.

“We welcome Semafone as a Tokenisation Partner and applaud their efforts to eliminate contact centre fraud,” said Gary Palgon, nuBridges vice president of Product Management. “Adding Semafone to our partner program means that any call centre that chooses to employ its DTMF tone blocking software on-premise or in the cloud will have the added security tokenisation brings to credit card protection while also lowering the cost of ongoing PCI DSS compliance.”
