Security Gateway for iPhone VPN access

Astaro : 09 February, 2009  (New Product)
Secure access to company resources through virtual private network now available for iPhone users
Astaro has announced that its Astaro Security Gateway is the first product to offer automatic configuration for the Apple iPhone IPSec VPN (virtual private network). This drastically simplifies VPN setup for the end user and also provides assurance that the tunnel has been configured securely and correctly.

Most businesses rely on applications like CRM or ERP systems that are hosted centrally within the company data centre. Astaro's compatibility with the integrated Cisco IPsec VPN client on the iPhone enables users to access internal email servers, documents and web sites in a secure, simple fashion. Whether telecommuting or working remotely, workers no longer have to open their laptops in order to safely access company or home network resources.

To use this feature, the user logs into the Astaro Security Gateway UserPortal via the iPhone browser and clicks the Install iPhone VPN button. From there, the setup is automated with all technical parameters being filled in on behalf of the user. Astaro is the first company to offer a customised configuration download that is simply imported into the iPhone OS. While other security vendors offer compatibility with the iPhone IPSec VPN client, they require the user to manually configure settings in order to gain access. Astaro's approach allows anyone to set up a configured tunnel in seconds without requiring any technical skills or background information.

"The extreme popularity of the iPhone has led to many users requesting access to company data via this device, but the security of this access had been a cause for concern. With this auto-configuration feature, employees can be more productive and enjoy easy, secure access to the company network and its data," said Gert Hansen, Founder and VP of Product Marketing at Astaro. "As I'm sure is the case with many people, the iPhone has become my smartphone of choice, and it is great peace of mind to know I can always securely access our internal business applications. We are happy to provide this functionality for free as part of every Astaro security appliance."

Astaro has created a configuration guide to provide step-by-step instructions on how to configure Apple's iPhone and Astaro Security Gateway VPN settings. Astaro's product offering is available as a software ISO, hardware appliance or virtual appliance. Astaro also offers a free, non-commercial home user software license available for download. The home user license uses the same software as the commercial license, includes all subscriptions, and offers protection for up to ten IP addresses. This allows any iPhone user to set up an Astaro network at home and connect securely to the home network at any time—all at no cost.
