SecureAmericas Conference on IT professional certification

(ISC)2 to take part in roundtable to discuss information security certification issues in the Americas
(ISC)2 has announced a new roundtable of top security certification organizations at its fifth annual SecureAmericas information security conference scheduled for June 4-5, 2009 at the Embassy Suites Hotel Crystal City in Arlington.

In a first-day session at 8:40 am titled "Certifying the IT Security Profession," a roundtable of industry stakeholders and experts will discuss the potential merits and dangers of instituting federal regulation over professional certification and licensure, as proposed in recent legislation. Moderated by Liesyl Franz, vice president, information security and global public policy, TechAmerica, the roundtable will include:

* ANSI - Dr Roy Swift, ANSI Program Director
* CompTIA - Dan Liutikas, Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary
* ISACA - John Lainhart, Partner Service Area Leader, Security, Privacy, Wireless & IT Governance, IBM Global Business Services - Public Sector
* (ISC)2 - Hord Tipton, Executive Director
* SANS - Mason Brown, Director

The two-day SecureAmericas conference agenda will also include a keynote and more than 15 other concurrent tracks on government security and professional development and enterprise management, including:

* "Biggest Vulnerabilities, Threats and the Actors Penetrating Our Public and Private Sector Systems" moderated by Patricia Titus, CISO, Federal Systems, Unisys with panelists Tony Sager, chief of the Information Assurance Directorate's (IAD) Vulnerability Analysis and Operations (VAO) Group, National Security Agency (NSA); Richard Smith, CSO for TSA; Kimberly Kiefer Peretti, senior counsel for Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section with the US Department of Justice; and Ed Lowery, assistant special agent in charge, US Secret Service;

* "A View from the Front Line: Results of The State of Cybersecurity from the Chief Information Security Officer's Perspective" featuring representatives from Cisco, the US Department of Commerce, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and (ISC)2, who will discuss the results from the first-ever in-depth survey of federal CISOs and senior security managers;

* "Critical Infrastructure Protection: The Ins and Outs from an Insider" led by Michael Assante, CISO of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), who will discuss the threats to our 1,800 power grids across the US;

* "Information Management: Information as a Strategic Asset in the 21st Century" led by Karen Evans, former administrator, E-Government and Information Technology, Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget, who will look at how information should be managed and protected to ensure the US can maintain its leadership and innovation in the global economy.

"This year's program is characterized by the evolving legislative, economic and threat environments impacting the federal information security community in and around the Beltway," said Eric Green, global development, (ISC)2 Events. "Conference attendees from government and industry will gain perspective on how to address the next wave of transition and its challenges from prominent industry councils, public-private partnerships and thought leaders with a vision for the future."

SecureAmericas is part of (ISC)2's Security Leadership Series, a year-round program that provides information security professionals worldwide the chance to advance their knowledge on emerging security issues while interacting with leading industry experts and expanding their peer networks. (ISC)2 certified members may also earn continuing professional education (CPE) credits.
