Secure remote network access for financial services provider

Check Point : 05 June, 2009  (Application Story)
The Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has chosen Connectra NGX R66 from Check Point for enabling secure remote access to its corporate network
Check Point Software Technologies has announced that Norwich & Peterborough Building Society is using the Connectra NGX R66 remote access gateway to provide secure access to corporate networks while protecting against malware, intrusion and other endpoint threats.

As one of the UK's leading financial services providers, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society wanted to improve remote access security to core business applications, to enable wider use of flexible working for staff. This also formed part of the Society's contingency planning strategy against pandemics or other serious incidents that would disrupt normal office working.

"We wanted to enhance remote access security, but also needed a solution that was flexible and cost-effective to maintain. This ruled out token-based authentication methods and client-based VPN solutions, because of the costs of managing and maintaining ID tokens and client software at every endpoint," said Andrew Winkless, Systems Artchitect for Norwich & Peterborough Building Society.

The Society chose Check Point's Connectra NGX R66 remote access gateway, licensed for 50 concurrent users. This followed a demonstration of the solution's DynamicID feature, which sends authentication codes to end-users via text message without the need of a dedicated authentication server, eliminating the need for employees to carry Smartcards or tokens that are easily lost.

A key factor in the decision was Connectra's Secure Workspace feature, which gives a secure environment on the remote user's PC, encrypting all session files such as attachments, cookies, emails, and passwords. This prevents sensitive corporate information from being viewed or stolen even after a session ends.

"Connectra has proven very easy to deploy and manage. It's also flexible, as we can expand the number of concurrent users for short periods as we need to, which makes it cost-effective. We estimate the solution will pay for itself in a year, compared with the costs of licensing and support for a client-based VPN solution," said Andrew Winkless.

"The Connectra VPN interface is very user-friendly and intuitive, which makes it easy for us to distribute remote access by simply delivering a text message to authenticate the end user. Also, the automated endpoint compliance scan increases security, ensuring the VPN user's PC is fully updated with the latest patches and anti-virus signatures before they are allowed network access."

Connectra NGX R66 is the only remote access gateway to combine SSL VPN, IPSec VPN and intrusion prevention with centralised management. It uses existing VPN infrastructure, allowing employees to connect from managed laptops and PCs using an IPSec connection. It also includes DynamicID, making it the first and only SSL VPN solution to send authentication codes to end-users via text message without the need of a dedicated authentication server, Smartcards or tokens.

To ensure infected computers do not pass threats onto the corporate network, Connectra NGX R66 uses integrated intrusion prevention and comprehensive endpoint security to block viruses, malware and malicious attacks.
