Secure hardware and software order from MoD

Trustmarque Solutions : 28 August, 2008  (Application Story)
Ministry of Defence orders encrypted and non-encrypted systems from Trustmarque Solutions
Trustmarque Solutions has won a two year contract to supply encrypted and non-encrypted hardware and software to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) following changes in the Defence Equipment and Supply (DE&S) framework (which equips and supports the UK's armed forces for current and future operations). Additionally, off the back of the announcement, the company has won a four million pound contract to supply anti-virus software from security vendor, McAfee.

Trustmarque has supplied software to the MoD for the past three years, however previously the DE&S dealt with software and hardware requirements separately. The DE&S has now established a consolidated framework, known as 'IA Contract', for all purchases which means it will move all hardware and software purchases through the same channel. This combined approach has therefore opened the opportunity for Trustmarque to alter its established contract to include the provision of hardware and to provide higher level security products for classified and top secret information.

Robert Cornish, MoD Key Account Manager for Trustmarque, comments on the deal: "Under the IA Contract, we will be able to supply the MoD with everything they need, from desktops and laptops, to software and all associated licences. This means we can bring the same savings through leveraging our long-established hardware relationships, as we have done historically for their software purchases, using our twenty years of experience establishing ourselves in this market.

The MoD has always valued the relationship it has with Trustmarque and in the past has expressed a wish to do more work through us, as we are a reliable and trusted partner that always delivers an industry leading service. It was therefore a natural choice for us to take on the hardware contract. In enterprises such as the MoD, IT is mission critical and mistakes can result in life and death situations if it falls down. At the same time it has a duty to spend money wisely on behalf of the public and value is essential, which means tenders are always competitive. So we are particularly pleased that we have come out on top once again and are able to extend our offering."

The DE&S consolidation comes as part of a wider strategy to formally merge the DE&S with the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), which is an independent office of HM Treasury, established to help Government deliver best value from its spending. To this end, the DE&S is collaborating heavily with the OGC to ensure their procurement methods are in line with one another, to make the eventual merger as seamless as possible. In the long term such an arrangement will provide continuity across the whole of government.
