Saving fleet fuel bills with vehicle telematics

VeriLocation : 04 February, 2009  (Technical Article)
Behavioural management of drivers using GPS tracking and vehicle telematics has a positive effect on fleet running costs
Fleet managers can save over £5,000 per vehicle per year by helping their drivers make subtle but powerful changes to the way they drive and operate their vehicles.

Reduction in wasted engine idling, smoother acceleration and braking, better speed management and reduced torque can result in an average MPG increase across a typical fleet of 10 per cent, according to leading GPS tracking and vehicle telematics company VeriLocation.

And that will give an average improved fuel saving of over 10% - adding up to a saving of about £5,000 per vehicle every year.

The company is using its VL-CANbus vehicle telematics system linked to it's VL-Fleet GPS box to help educate drivers about the difference they can make on the roads every day.

"The telematics information gives the fleet manager solid evidence to confidently handle this conversation with their drivers," said VeriLocation's Andrew Overton.

"Faced with indisputable facts about how they currently drive and how much that costs the company, combined with educational measures, even the most stubborn of drivers can learn to change their driving style."

There are of course other benefits to a better driving style, including savings on replacement brake parts and reduced downtime for maintenance.

The VL-CANbus technology can be used to monitor a number of key performance indicators for each vehicle in real time.

It can even raise the alarm if it thinks fuel is being siphoned.

Trials with VeriLocation's customers have typically found there are fuel savings available of over 10 per cent, with a return on investment achieved within 3 to 6 months.
