Russian nuclear centre chooses DeviceLock for data protection

DeviceLock : 02 March, 2009  (Application Story)
A Russian nuclear and scientific research centre has protected its information resources from unauthorised leakage of data by using DeviceLock
DeviceLock has announced that the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre and All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics (VNIITF) has deployed DeviceLock software across their corporate network. One of the largest nuclear research centres in the world, VNIIFT has chosen DeviceLock to eliminate the threat of unauthorized information leakage from workstations via uncontrolled local ports and peripheral devices.

A Federal State Unitary Enterprise and part of "Rosatom" State Corporation, VNIITF was founded in 1955 in the Urals in the city of Snezhinsk and named after the Academic E I Zababakhin. Its original mission was the development and testing of nuclear and thermonuclear explosives to ensure parity in nuclear weapons with the United States. VNIITF has grown into one of the largest and most renowned nuclear centres in the country and worldwide and is now tasked with solving critically important scientific problems and technical challenges in building nuclear weapons, as well as in peaceful applications of nuclear technology. At the same time, VNIITF is working on a host of formidable national economic and industry projects. Due to its development and research projects, its unique level of scientific expertise, as well as its modern equipment and technical facilities, the institute has effectively integrated its activities and achievements in national development efforts and international economic relationships.

VNIITF is paying relentless and focused attention to all aspects of information security provisioning for its IT infrastructure and operations. The institute's IT organization monitors its information security system status on an ongoing basis and conducts special-purpose scientific research to gain improvements and efficiencies. In addition, it performs regular audits and off-schedule inspections.

Faced with an increasing number of applicable legal and regulatory requirements, VNIITF decided to take extra precaution in administrative and corporate policies that govern secrecy order and protection of the corporate IT system. In addition, the operational need to put under centralized control all local input-output information flows at employee's workstations became apparent.

In the scope of an organization-wide corporate information security system development project, a joint decision was made by the institute's IT Department and its Security Service to protect 450 workstations equipped with local input-output ports and peripheral devices by certified information security products that enforce strict administrative control over these local data channels, including printing channels.

To solve this task, after studying available products and conducting thorough evaluations, VNIITF selected DeviceLock software from DeviceLock, Inc. Initially, the product was tested in a pilot project. "The DeviceLock software has been thoroughly studied and evaluated by our IT specialists in a year-long pilot installation on several workstations used in various administrative and service divisions within the IT organization. During this period, DeviceLock has demonstrated its high effectiveness thus giving us a full confidence that there should not be any unexpected problems with expanding this technology solution up to the project's full scale," commented Sergey Kaygorodtsev, Head of ICT Support Division, VNIITF. "Thanks to the experience we gained during DeviceLock pilot deployment and to its comprehensive product documentation, the full-scale deployment went without any problems. With DeviceLock in place, we're confident that the threat associated with the presence of uncontrolled local ports and peripheral devices in the corporate network has been reliably eliminated and we are satisfied with the results achieved."

DeviceLock-based software solutions proactively protect organizations of any industry and size against data leakage and corporate network infiltration by malware via the local ports of employees' computers, thereby significantly reducing business risks resulting from insider negligence, errors or malicious actions. Designed for Microsoft Windows operating systems and featuring comprehensive centralized management natively integrated with Microsoft Active Directory, DeviceLock software enables you to precisely control, log, shadow-copy, and audit end-user access to any type of computer ports or peripheral devices including local, network and virtual printers, as well as Windows Mobile and Palm OS based personal mobile devices. DeviceLock also integrates with leading encryption products from PGP, Lexar, and TrueCrypt, in order to protect data on removable storage devices. In addition, DeviceLock blocks operations of USB and PS/2 hardware keyloggers.
