Rugged PC gains fingerprint authentication

AuthenTec : 25 March, 2009  (Application Story)
Single swipe, sub surface fingerprint sensor enhances security for users of Motion Computing's new J3400 rugged tablet PC
AuthenTec has announced that its fingerprint sensor has been integrated into the new Motion Computing J3400 rugged tablet PC, offering Power of Touch features including security, convenience and personalization. The J3400 tablet, which offers all day battery life and an industry-leading bright outdoor display, integrates AuthenTec's AES2550 fingerprint sensor to protect the tablet PC, its stored data, and the networks to which it connects.

"We designed the new J3400 around today's highly mobile user who demands a very rugged, lightweight tablet PC with today's best performance and security features," said Mike Stinson, VP of Marketing, Motion Computing. "When considering user ergonomics and security for the J3400 we turned to our longtime supplier AuthenTec for a convenient, durable fingerprint sensor solution, and once again they delivered."

"We believe that Motion Computing has designed another winning product with the J3400, and we were pleased that they chose our AES2550 sensor for enhanced user security, convenience and personalization in this rugged tablet PC," said Tom Aebli, AuthenTec's vice president of Wireless Products. "The J3400 is the seventh tablet PC model from Motion Computing to leverage the multiple features of an AuthenTec sensor, and we think users will appreciate the multiple functions they can enable on this innovative tablet with the simple swipe of a finger."

The J3400's lightweight package, superior ergonomics and integrated features make it well suited for highly mobile tablet PC users across a variety of markets including healthcare, construction, field sales and service and government. AuthenTec's AES2550 helps simplify password management while increasing data security on the rugged and user-friendly J3400. The AES2550 offers improved fingerprint imaging, sensor durability and performance over the Company's best-selling product ever, the AES2501.

The AES2550 brings convenient security to PC users by eliminating burdensome passwords and website logins, as well as Power of Touch features including security, convenience personalization and navigation. In addition to simplifying PC login, the AES2550 sensor's AlwaysOn authentication capability greatly reduces security risks if a PC is lost or stolen, and allows users to leave their PCs unattended without fear that an unauthorized person might tamper with stored or network files.

Based on the Company's patented TruePrint technology to deliver extremely accurate and reliable fingerprint imaging, the AES2550 reads below the surface of the skin to the live layer, where a person's true fingerprint resides. This unique subsurface approach enables AuthenTec sensors to overcome common skin surface conditions to read virtually every fingerprint, every time. TruePrint also allows AuthenTec to provide the smallest sensors on the market, yet provide all the security, privacy and convenience afforded in its larger form factor devices.

Motion's J3400 offers all of the durability and functionality of a rugged PC, without the extra weight and price associated with traditional fully rugged devices. The J3400 includes Intel Centrino 2 processor technology, a shock-resistant, high-intensity display screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Gobi mobile broadband connectivity, and a hot-swappable dual battery for all day computing.
