RFID based key management for education

Deister Electronics (UK) : 14 September, 2007  (New Product)
Deister's proxSafe RFID key management system now available for colleges and universities.
Lost or misplaced keys is always a frustrating experience, but in a college or university environment, where there are often many hundreds of people constantly moving from place to place for lectures or other activities, such an event has the potential to cause chaos.

A recent incident involving a number of sets of keys recently caused the Security Manager at one of Scotland's universities to review access control and key management, a process which has now resulted in the installation of the deister electronic RFID key management system, proxSafe.

The proxSafe system is an intelligent key management system. It can secure large numbers of keys out of view in a stylish aluminium key cabinet, providing a cost-effective access control solution to doors which are still secured by a conventional lock and key. Smart RFID keyTags are secured in the cabinet using proxCylinders, a combination of a proximity reader and a mechanical lock.

Initially this installation is securing twelve sets of keys, but significant expansion of key numbers will take place late in 2007 when a new multi-million pound building dedicated to technology studies is completed.

proxSafe makes taking and returning keys on a 24/7 basis both quick and easy. Barrel illumination provides the visual location of an individual key in the cabinet, and RFID keyTags work like proximity smart cards. Fast track key return is achieved by simply holding the relevant keyTag in front of the reader; this activates the cabinet door and illuminates the correct return location.

Darren Harrold, Sales and Marketing Director of deister electronic UK is pleased with this installation, saying:
"I have always thought that schools, colleges and universities would benefit from the security and simplicity of use offered by proxSafe, so I am delighted we have now completed another key management installation in the education sector."
