Kaba Ltd : 14 April, 2009  (Application Story)
The University of York is using card based RFID access control for its student facilities as part of a large scale facilities upgrade
RFID based access control for York University
York is one of the best universities in the UK, and one of the top 100 universities in the world, and needs to grow in order to maintain its position. It also needs to make sure that it offers the best facilities to staff and students for research and teaching.

In order to achieve this, the University of York is upgrading buildings on the existing campus while developing a brand new site to increase and improve the facilities currently on offer.

The first college to be constructed on Heslington East will house Goodricke College which is to move across from its current location on Heslington West. The new 600 bed college will provide a mixture of accommodation both standard and en-suite, with its first intake scheduled for October 2009.

Construction work on Goodricke College is underway and Kaba Ltd have been awarded the contract to supply and install a fully integrated solution which includes Access Control for over 100 on-line IP access control doors, and 654 stand alone locks on the student's bedrooms using one RFID card.

The off-line doors gain their validation from the regular use of the on-line access control validation readers. The system is scalable to cover all the University's future development needs

One of the greatest challenges for any education establishment is balancing the need to create an open, stimulating and comfortable environment, while ensuring that people and equipment are protected from the threat of theft, vandalism and physical attack.

With an extensive product portfolio comprising mechanical and mechatronic locking systems, electronic access control, security doors and time and attendance, Kaba has developed integrated solutions specifically for the education sector to provide a complete security solution for any school, college or university.
