Practical advice for Safer Internet Day

Fortinet : 11 February, 2009  (Technical Article)
Fortinet tips on how to avoid the latest techniques being used by cyber-criminals including windscreen leaflet campaigns and social networking
Today sees internet users focus on their online safety with the onset of Safer Internet Day. However, whether it be a multi billion pound business, or a private home user; the malicious activity of the cyber criminal stops for no-one, or should we say, no day.

A cybercriminal is thought to have many menacing attributes, but his aim, above all else, is stealing your money. As such, Guillaume Lovet, head of the threat response team at Fortinet has compiled a rundown of the latest innovative ways in which cybercriminals will be aiming to get around your security defences today, of all days…

1. The USB phenomenon - Treat a USB key like you would an unattended bag - leave it alone. Cyber criminals have turned to 'leaving' USB keys in public places and work spaces with the intention that a curious user will not be able to resist its contents, and thus infecting the network. Curb your enthusiasm.

2. The unsocial side of social networking - The popularity of social networking sites and 'in-the-cloud' computing seems unstoppable and has created a goldmine for cyber criminals. With social networking sites are underpinned by the trust of its members criminals are increasingly exploiting this, impersonating 'friends' and enticing people to click on codec's which will cause infection.

3. Windshield marketing - It's simple, do not click on websites that you do not know or may not be trusted. The latest phenomenon is the windshield virus where cybercriminals produce physical leaflets with a web-link and distribute them on people's windscreen. This may appear old school, but with additional income at a premium in today's climate, it is an easy target for today's criminals.

4. Virtual Reality - Cyber criminals are, at every possible turn, taking the opportunity to steal real-life money, through virtual-life. We have seen a huge increase in online gaming malware with Trojans jumping a staggering 75 places in Fortinet's top 100 virus list.
