Portable USB-based biometric authentication for remote access.

Accario : 22 October, 2007  (New Product)
AccessStick is a portable security appliance providing on-board biometric authentication for access to IT resources from remote devices.
Accario has announced the general availability of its innovative portable client security system, AccessStick which will initially ship for Citrix Access Gateway solutions. AccessStick provides world leading portable client security via a biometrically secured USB device to simplify connectivity and improve security for organisations requiring remote access to corporate applications.

"AccessStick is the result of working closely with Access Gateway and VPN users, especially within the Citrix community, to develop a solution that solves an increasingly common problem," explains Brian DaBinett, Co-Founder and CEO of Accario.

The rapid growth of SSL VPN technology has quickly established a significant share of the remote access market. However, fears over internet security has prompted many browsers to be configured to restrict the downloading of the applets and tools required to connect remotely. In addition, although many organisations welcome the relative ease of deployment offered by SSL-VPN technology - many are still concerned by the inability to enforce end point security and the possibility that sensitive material will remain on a client machine after a session has ended.

According to Nigel Stanley, Practice Leader: IT Security at Bloor Research, "If you have a Citrix environment that needs to support remote users then it would be a good idea to have a long hard look at the Accario AccessStick. It could be just what you are looking for and become an all-in-one replacement for those insecure USB devices used by remote workers."

To further secure and simplify the use of Access Gateway, AccessStick embeds all the necessary software required to connect which can only be launched by a user authenticated via biometric sensor built into the unit. As David Coombes, Co-Founder and Chief Architect for Accario explains, "All operations that would normally leave information on a local client cache are instead redirected to the AccessStick's own internal 1gb drive - which also acts as secure local storage."

In operation, AccessStick users simply insert the devices into any USB port of an internet connected Windows client and after local biometric authentication, the pre-determined corporate remote access system is launched without any installation, elevated privileges or user intervention.

Initially available for Citrix Access Gateway infrastructure, AccessStick has been in beta testing with a number of early adoption customers for the last 3 months ahead of its official UK and US launch.

"The Citrix market for AccessStick is approximately 60,000 organisations who can potentially benefit from its deployments and we are testing other versions of AccessStick suitable for a number of other vendors in the SSL VPN market that have similar requirements for a portable client security system," explains DaBinett.
