Policy management system for Devon Council.

NETconsent : 27 June, 2007  (Application Story)
Devon Council to take policy management system from NETconsent to ensure that the Council's IT security policy is adhered to in every respect.
NETconsent has announced that South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council are implementing NETconsent V4. These contracts are the result of a software evaluation project by the Devon Information Security Partnership, which shortlisted NETconsent as the policy management provider. This product interest further demonstrates NETconsent's leadership in policy management and its extended growth in the local government sector.

The evaluation project run by the Devon Information Security Partnership brought councils together to share resources, identify a suitable solution and raise awareness of automated policy management. Using economies of scale the partnership was able to negotiate special pricing with NETconsent.

Robin Barlow, a member of the Devon Information Security Partnership and ICT Support Manager, South Hams District Council explained, "We needed a solution that would meet our criteria to effectively manage security policies, which has been very hard to achieve with current manual methods". He continued, "The solution is easy to deploy and NETconsent has provided an excellent level of support. When we commenced the evaluation we were only looking to manage the security-related policies, but as we progressed we realised that many other council policies and procedures would also benefit from an automated policy management solution."

Dominic Saunders commented, "We are really pleased to work with Devon Information Security Partnership and demonstrate the benefits that automated policy management can bring to the individual councils. Policies are an integral part of managing risk, information and people. It is great to see South Hams and West Devon Councils taking steps to prevent possible corporate litigation."

Devon Information Security Partnership was established in response to the Government's call for Local Government (within Devon being Councils, National Parks and the Fire Service) to adopt standards to comply with ISO 27001 (previously BS7799). Working with the Society of IT Managers (SOCITM), the group broke the ISO standard into levels. It was a requirement of the 'Bronze' level to ensure that security policies were distributed and individually signed off. The partnership realised that automation software is available and therefore an evaluation sub-project was created, to review different systems.
