Patient Privacy Audit Framework Available from FairWarning

Fair Warning : 06 May, 2010  (New Product)
FairWarning releases data definition guides for use by the healthcare industry for establishing patient privacy breach detection measures
FairWarning has announced the availability of the first independent data definition guides for patient privacy breach detection and prevention in healthcare. The FairWarning Patient Privacy Framework data definition guides are based on the company's experience deploying privacy auditing and monitoring solutions in more than 300 hospitals and 1,200 clinics across the United States, Canada and Europe.

FairWarning has worked closely with customers, partners, and industry specialists to develop this proven framework and corresponding data definition guides for wide-scale patient privacy auditing. They are designed to assist healthcare providers, systems integrators and electronic health record and application vendors in establishing best practices required for breach detection, remediation, audit responses and organizational adoption of patient privacy auditing and monitoring.

Leading healthcare organizations are already adopting privacy auditing solutions; however, almost all systems continue to suffer from major patient privacy, compliance and auditing gaps that may involve hundreds of applications accessing protected health information.

"Healthcare technology vendors are just becoming aware of the data required to conduct breach detection, remediation and Federal driven audit responses," said Kurt Long, CEO of FairWarning. "The FairWarning Patient Privacy Framework establishes a uniform framework in which healthcare entities can initiate and maintain wide-scale patient privacy auditing. Without established wide-scale patient privacy auditing, the rollout and success of EHRs is at risk."

Globally and domestically, healthcare legislation is mandating the protection of patient privacy and an organizations' ability to audit access to private patient data. Healthcare organizations worldwide are recognizing the value of the FairWarning Framework.

"The new federal breach notification law was a significant step forward for patient privacy. But this legislation will be an empty promise if is not successfully implemented. Widespread adoption of leading industry best practices is key to building and maintaining public trust in EHRs,' says Deven McGraw, Director of the Health Privacy Project at the Centre for Democracy & Technology.

'Healthcare application vendors currently work in isolation, making it extremely difficult for healthcare organisations to match up the data for audit purposes. FairWarning's work in providing best practices is to be highly commended and as the market leader in this field, will prove very valuable," says Ted Boye, eHealth Manager at NHS Lothian in Scotland.

The FairWarning Patient Privacy Framework is a series of three (3) practical documents intended to enable wide-scale patient privacy auditing, breach detection, remediation and breach prevention:

1. Patient Privacy Data Definition Guide provides details on the data requirements and definitions necessary to conduct minimum and advanced levels of patient privacy auditing. Available now.

2. Patient Privacy in Enterprise Security Data Definition Guide details the integration between privacy auditing and enterprise information security systems. Available June 2010.

3. Putting the Patient Privacy Framework into Practice details the best practices for privacy breach detection, remediation, training and breach prevention. Available July 2010.
